Sunday 2pm: West Ham v Aston Villa
Premier League match at The London Stadium

Aston Villa to win

With the FA Cup keeping people engaged there’s just one Premier League game on this Sunday, the untelevised West Ham vs Aston Villa clash. With both clubs sat inside the top seven at the start of the weekend, it’s a shame that it won’t be on TV. These are two of the Premier League’s biggest overachievers this season and this meeting should be an enjoyable game.

Both West Ham and Aston Villa come into this on the back of impressive European performances on Thursday with West Ham winning 5-0 over Freiburg and Aston Villa being Ajax 4-0, the perfect antidote to the preceding weekend’s 4-0 loss to Spurs.

Despite that 4-0 loss to Spurs being fresh on the memory, it’s worth remembering that Villa had won the previous three games and are deservedly fourth in the Premier League heading into the weekend. They’ve scored 59 goals, 14 more than West Ham, and with 41 conceded they’ve allowed eight fewer. They’re the better team and are a good price to win on the road here.

Both teams to score

With a combined 104 Premier League goals this season, these are two teams who know where the back of the net is. We’ve also seen both teams giving up plenty of goals too.

A look through Villa’s results this season shows that they’ve been in games with both teams scoring 67.9% of the time with seven of their last 10 games seeing Both Teams To Score.

It’s been a similar state of affairs for West Ham too with 64.3% of their Premier League games this season seeing both teams score, including each of their past three games. These are two teams with strong attacking players and who have struggled defensively of late, so we should see goals and Both Teams To Score.

Jarrod Bowen to have 1 or more shots on target

We’re going to back West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen to have at least one shot on target. The 27-year old has had another fine season and continues to see his reputation grow. He’s scored 14 goals in 27 games, a record just over one in two.

A deeper dive into Bowen’s stats show that he’s averaged 2.4 shots per game, the highest total on his team, averaging 0.6 more per game than the next man up, Mohammed Kudus. Villa give up 10.7 shots per game and with Bowen’s current performance levels he’s bound to get into spaces to have shots and will likely get at least one on target.

Ollie Watkins to score or assist

Last weekend we saw Spurs do an excellent job of shutting down Ollie Watkins. Have they laid the blueprint for how to defend against the 28-year old? It’s unlikely. It’s been another sensational season for Watkins, in which he has again been Villa’s best player.

Through 28 games in the Premier League he’s bagged 16 goals and assisted a further 10 more. He has a goal contribution nearly every single game, truly elite numbers, and assuming he’s fit he’ll fancy his chances of helping his team find another one against a West Ham side who have allowed more goals than anybody else in the top half of the Premier League table.

Mohammed Kudus to commit 1 or more fouls

Since arriving from Ajax it’s debatable that Mohammed Kudus has been West Ham’s best player, he’s certainly in with a shout of winning that argument alongside Bowen and Lucas Paqueta.

Despite just starting 17 of his 23 Premier League games, he’s still averaged 1.2 fouls given up per game, that puts him second in the team when you count players with 10 or more appearances, behind Paqueta who has 1.8. Kudus’ tackling ability isn’t as good as the rest of his game and against Villa’s speedy attack he’ll need to get back and cover for his fullback, something that should see him give up a foul or two.
