Man United v Liverpool
FA Cup match at Old Trafford, Manchester
TV: ITV1 & ITVX, Sunday, 3:30pm

Everyone spoke about last weekend’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester City being the last meeting of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, but as they’re the top two in the FA Cup outright market, they may meet again.

Don’t know where, don’t know when, but probably at Wembley next month, to be honest.

All Klopp has to do is get the Reds to win a cup tie at Old Trafford, something they haven’t done since 1921. This is obviously one of those stats which is irrelevant as they’ve rarely played in the intervening century, but Liverpool only have two wins from nine visits under their current boss.

Paddy Power thinks they’ll get the job done on St Patricks Day, and who can blame them? Manchester United are a mess and are somehow sixth in the Premier League table despite having a lower goal difference than Chelsea. If they’re “blue billion-pound bottle jobs,” what are your precious Red Devils, Gary?

Liverpool to Win

Liverpool are surprisingly bottom of a mini-league of the top six, one point adrift of United. While they’ve only lost two of the seven matches, the Reds’ sole victory came against Aston Villa.

If Erik ten Hag has one other advantage here, it’s that Liverpool have played twice since his side were last in action. The United boss can also point to holding the Reds to a goalless draw last time they met and beating them in their only visit to Old Trafford during his time in charge.

But Liverpool had 34 shots in that 0-0 clash at Anfield and their side from their last game at United’s home bears little resemblance to the starting XI Klopp will field here. The Reds’ midfield has been rebuilt and re-energised and is all the better for it.

The other problem for United is that they’ll have to come out and play a bit. Ten Hag could justify his bus parking tactics at Anfield as Liverpool have the best home record around. The Old Trafford faithful won’t stand for their heroes being as cowardly.

And recent history shows that the visitors will tear them apart given the chance. Assuming Klopp selects a suitably strong team – and with no match for two weeks, he should – then it’s impossible to look past a Liverpool win.

Over 3.5 Goals

Only Everton’s matches in the Premier League have averaged fewer goals than United’s this season. Indeed, it took a pair of penalties for the latter to beat the former 2-0 at Old Trafford last weekend.

However, against teams who can actually score goals, it’s a different matter. The Red Devils’ five home matches against the teams who start the weekend in the top eight have all seen at least three goals.

That says nothing for the score lines in the last four matches between these teams in Manchester either: 2-1, 0-5, 2-4 and 3-2, the last of which was in the FA Cup. Neither team will want extra time this far into a long season so we can expect chaos and Over 3.5 Goals.

Mohamed Salah to Score

Mohamed Salah loves facing United. He has scored more goals against them than any other club for Liverpool and has four assists to go with 12 strikes in 13 appearances.

The Egyptian may not get the full game. Salah unexpectedly played the full match against Sparta Prague on Thursday night, having only had two substitute run outs prior to that.

But with a goal every 51 minutes across his last four visits to Old Trafford, Liverpool’s main man should get enough time on the pitch to score. Even if he starts but doesn’t find the net and goes off, whomever replaces him from the bench takes over as your selection. Win win.

Don’t forget about our new Super Sub offer where if you back a player in certain markets, if they’re substituted their picks transfer over to who they’ve been replaced by. Read more about Paddy Power’s Super Sub offer here.

Over 11.5 Corners

The air of chaos which pervades United matches explains why they lead the league for total corners in 2023/24, with 13.3 per game. Their lack of control in end-to-end, basketball style matches means that corners are always likely.

There were 14 in the meeting at Old Trafford last season and at least nine in the previous four clashes there. As there were 12 at Anfield in December and we’re expecting a far more open game, we should see Over 11.5 Corners here.

Over 4.5 Cards

The FA, in their infinite wisdom, have appointed the current Premier League referee with the highest cards per game average to oversee a fiery derby between two bitter rivals. Smart. John Brooks averages 4.4 bookings per match across his top flight career.

The yellow card count for the last six league meetings is 21-6 to United, who also had Paul Pogba sent off back in 2021. If Liverpool start giving the home side another run around, we could be set for similar retribution.

Finish your Bet Builder with Over 4.5 Cards and don’t be surprised if that looks like a low bar by full time.
