I bloody love football. If you read that in David Brent’s voice, you did it correctly.

The only issue, of course, is that all the headlines this week are going to be grabbed by the Cheltenham Festival. Now, I’d never turn my nose up at a single punting opportunity across either codes, and it’s worth noting that you can get involved here too.

It’s having your cake and eating it, too.

Never really understood that one, but the fact I’ve now used it in-copy means I can never again complain about the nature of it.

As if the punting gods were looking down on us, they’ve scheduled the final race on each day just far enough apart from the feast of evening football so that you can nip out for much-needed dinner and to pretend you’re semi-interested in how everyone else’s day went.

Now, starter’s orders please, everyone.

15:30 Cheltenham – State Man

Here he goes now, punting one of the shortest-priced favourites in the history of the Champion Hurdle to kick us off. Well yeah, and I’ll tell you why: it’s because you’re getting 1/3 that State Man doesn’t unseat, fall or get brought down.

Everything in this race is either running here to pick up place money, or, in Gordon Elliott’s case, he wants to split Teahupoo and Irish Point.

Iberico Lord wins a Betfair hurdle and would need to find about two stone weight to beat State Man here. This ended as a contest with the reigning champ Constitution Hill drank the Kool-Aid at Henderson’s.

16:10 Cheltenham – Lossiemouth

Here he goes again, backing the second-shortest-priced fav on the day when everything else is a live bet. Lossiemouth, getting seven pounds, would run State Man very close. The form she showed over the winter has her bang there with the mares’ allowance, and only that they’ve got the first selection in there, and feel this is a guaranteed pot, they’re keeping her here.

And why not? Yes, the extra half-mile should cause some concern. About as much as it did for Annie Power. She’s the only true Grade One horse in here, and she’ll be third-favourite for the Champion Hurdle this time, next year.

Barcelona v Napoli – Napoli to Win

I know backing Barcelona at home in the Champions League at even money feels a real opportunity, but they’re an absolute disgrace. Yes, Napoli probably did well to get a draw in the opening game, but you have to note the pressure of playing at home seems to cause Barcelona these days.

With fans absolutely on their backs as soon as they give away the ball, it’s enough to have Xavi walk away from the club at the end of the season.

Arsenal v Porto – Arsenal to Win

I mean, it’s not the biggest shout in the world, but it does add slight value. They’re a distant enough margin better than Porto, and I quite like them having to tackle a game on the front foot because they have to.

The key criticism of this team tends to be due to them taking an age to get up to speed. Well, that’s not the case anymore here, they simply can’t afford to.

    Both Teams to Score

However, Arsenal are going to be incredibly susceptible to breaks in behind because the likes of Declan Rice will have to push further up the pitch. Something they don’t need to instigate at home in the Premier League. Indeed, the Gunners have kept just one clean sheet over their last six at home, while Porto have netted 15 over their last six in their travels.
