Arsenal v Brentford
Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, London
TV: Sky Sports Premier League/Main Event, Saturday, 5:30pm

What an opportunity this weekend presents for Arsenal. Beat Brentford on Saturday evening and they will rise to the Premier League summit, and if Liverpool draw with Manchester City the following day, they’ll still be there until after the forthcoming international break.

It won’t make them favourites to win the title, they visit the Etihad for in their following Premier League match, but it will be an excellent position in which to be after being written off in December.

Brentford need a result too, even if this doesn’t fall into ‘must win’ territory. The Bees start the weekend six points clear of the relegation zone and the gap could be down to three by the time this match kicks off. Can Thomas Frank’s boys help themselves and deal the Gunners’ title hopes a severe blow?

Arsenal -1

The Premier League meetings of these teams have tended to be close. Arsenal needed an 89th minute goal from Kai Havertz to win the reverse fixture in November while Brentford drew 1-1 at the Emirates Stadium last season. According to expected goals, the Bees should actually have won that game. However, this is the problem when you look at Brentford and xG, the data often favours them, the outcomes not so much.

The underlying numbers suggest the visitors have a much better chance of a positive result than the odds imply but you can’t back them based on both teams’ records in 2023/24.

The Gunners have played 12 league matches against the teams who start the day in the bottom eight of the Premier League table and won the lot by an aggregate scoreline of 39-6. That’s not good news for a Brentford side that has lost all seven away matches against the current top nine and to each of the top four at home too.

With Arsenal having won its last five league games by at least two goals (and an average of 4.4), they will surely beat an out-of-form Brentford by that margin too.

Both Teams to Score

A likely factor in much of Arsenal’s success over the last two seasons is that Mikel Arteta has been able to keep a consistent starting XI. He made just one change per league match last season, the fewest in the Premier League, and it has only risen to 1.7 this term even with the addition of Champions League football.

But one change will be enforced here as David Raya can’t face his parent club. Former number one Aaron Ramsdale will come in, but he hasn’t played in two months and has conceded in all four matches he has played at the Emirates this season. It’ll be a long evening for the Bees but they should ensure that Both Teams to Score lands.

Kai Havertz to Score

Arsenal’s last seven goal scorers have been different players. Their most in-form man over their last 10 league games is Bukayo Saka, with eight goals, but he was substituted at half time of the 6-0 mauling of Sheffield United, while Gabriel Martinelli had to go off in that game too.

Arteta won’t take any unnecessary risks here with Porto due at the Emirates on Tuesday, so while that duo should feature, pick Kai Havertz for your goal scorer selection. He has netted in each of the Gunners’ last three league games, the only player for whom that is the case.

Over 10.5 Corners

Only three of Brentford’s away matches this season haven’t hit double figures for corners. One of them was in the other half of north London, but there were 11 in their matches at the Etihad and Stamford Bridge, 12 at Old Trafford, and 14 at Anfield.

The corner count has been a bit more erratic at the Emirates in 2023/24, but as the Bees’ two Premier League visits saw 11 and 14, there is likely to be Over 10.5 Corners once again.

Over 3.5 Cards

The last four league meetings of these teams each saw exactly two cards, and Arsenal currently sits bottom of the top flight for total cards per game in 2023/24 too.

There should be more bookings here. Only three teams have received more yellow cards on the road than Brentford and match referee Rob Jones has shown over 3.5 in 13 of his 15 Premier League matches this season. Among the eight refs with at least as many games, that’s the highest hit rate for this bet. With Jonesy overseeing the Bees, Over 3.5 Cards appears an inevitability.
