Blackburn v Newcastle
FA Cup match at Ewood Park, Blackburn
TV: BBC One, Tuesday, 7:45pm
Ah, the old Alan Shearer rivalry eh? Right up there with the worst rivalries of all-time, alongside that Brighton and Palace derby that’s named after a motorway.
But the FA Cup acts as some degree of solace for both of these teams as they’re going through the ringer, for totally different reasons.
Newcastle are suffering due to their commitment to an unsustainable style of play under Eddie Howe that was always going to blow up in their faces, while Blackburn made changes for the sake of it, now with John Eustace at the helm; a man who Birmingham, a side below them in the Championship, deemed sub-standard.
Now, will either of these teams win the trophy? Blackburn won’t because they’re not good enough, and Newcastle won’t because they’re allergic to silverware.
However, this feels like an important juncture for both. Newcastle cannot lose this, or they face a slide to a chasm, while a positive result should make this manic phase under Eustace turn feelgood.
Newcastle to Win
Newcastle generally beat the teams they should beat. But that’s their limitation really. Apart from having a weird hoodoo over Aston Villa and that shock victory over Arsenal earlier in the season, they’re kind of where their performances are, in terms of the league table.
They’re tearing average sides apart because they’ve got better players than them. And that’s a good sign that they’re capable of not performing too far below their expectation and a real sign of Eddie Howe being a viable managerial candidate for clubs not intent on taking over the world as we know it.
Over 3.5 Goals
Here is a list of Newcastle’s last four results in the Premier League: a 4-1 loss to Arsenal; a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth; a 2-3 win over Nottingham Forest, and a 4-4 draw with Luton.
It feels like a mid-tenure crisis for Eddie Howe, and his failings in the Champions League have removed any element of belief that he can succeed to the required degree by using restraint and control.
They’re now absolutely madcap and that’s fine. I suppose with the buy-in from supporters so crucial from a PR perspective, if you’re not top-end competitive, then you better be entertaining.
Both Teams to Score
A must-include for every single Bet Builder you do for Newcastle. Their only away clean sheet in the Premier League this season came in a 8-0 hammering of Sheffield United.
Anthony Gordon to Score
While smaller sides, and particularly John Eustace sides, pack central areas, the emphasis is often on ball carriers to create, that is very much obvious in this instance.
Anthony Gordon is the type of difference-maker that bigger teams need in FA Cup games against smaller sides because putting bodies around a central striker is the most surefire way to ensure you don’t concede early.
Sam Gallagher to be Shown a Card
And the easiest way to get them off their rhythm is by hammering a centre half early in a game. Sam Gallagher does this against weaker sides in the Championship, let alone Alexander Isak.
