      Chelsea v Liverpool

      Sunday, 3pm
Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium, London
      TV: Sky Sports Main Event

This Liverpool team always seem to be getting results even when they’re not at their best. We saw it again on Wednesday when they had to fight back from 1-0 down against Luton. They weren’t at their best, and the crowd was pretty flat and sometimes with a game like that it can be a case of “entertain us”.

But in the second half they clicked into gear last night. Virgil Van Dijk header was a captain’s moment, something that the team needed after a flat first half.

And let’s be honest, we’re never going to remember this game. It’s a case of just getting through it before the cup final.

You’re hoping to get no more injuries. Everybody’s mind is thinking about that because you’ve got so many injuries as well before. Players are aware of it as well –  they don’t want to get hurt before Sunday.

Liverpool just can’t afford any more injuries as it is.

The injury list is absolutely ridiculous. I was at the Brentford game when Dawrin Nunes went down, and Diogo Jota’s injury looks bad too. They lost Curtis Jones as well in that game. Add Alisson on top of that, Szobozslai too, Trent Alexander-Arnold –  these are key players.

Chelsea have to look at that and think it gives them a chance – a full-strength Liverpool side would make this a pretty routine win.

If you were looking at this game two or three weeks ago, you’d have thought there’s absolutely no way Chelsea can win. We saw them well-beaten 4-1 a few weeks back at Anfield.

The manager’s made some big decisions too in his selections since the losses to Liverpool and Wolves. Conor Gallagher has been playing really well. And others are gaining confidence but I still think they’re miles off from where they need to be.

With Chelsea hitting some form and Liverpool’s injuries, you might wonder are the stars aligning for them. They showed the pace they  have when they hit Man City with it last week. Cole Palmer can pick a pass too, so they have threats – they’ve spent over a billion quid so they should have some options up there!

But I can’t see them doing it still. They’re not at the same level as a team like Liverpool, or anywhere near it.

Match Odds: Liverpool to Win (extra-time not included)

I expect Liverpool will be on the front foot and obviously Chelsea have got dangerous players who can catch you on the break.

It should be a tighter game than it would be if everyone was fit for Liverpool. I’d fancy Liverpool to edge it in normal time. Chelsea might score but Liverpool have enough to overcome that.

      Mo Salah to Score

Mo Salah gets his obligatory goal. I know he’s maybe not up to full fitness yet but he’ll want to start the final.

And he’ll probably have to with Jota and possibly Nunez struggling. Salah will have to come in and play and I imagine he’ll score if he does.

Cole Palmer to Have 1 or More Shots on Target

Chelsea’s best players this season’s been Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher. Ben Chilwell coming back is a big plus for them. I think he’s a bit of a leader and they miss Reece James.

These are the players you’re looking to perform in a game like this. Palmer looks a good option to get a shot on target.

Raheem Sterling to be Fouled 2 or More Times

We saw Sterling score last week against Man City and will carry a similar threat against another former side. Liverpool’s defenders will have to get to grips with his pace and I could see him being fouled a few times as they attempt to rein him in.

Enzo Fernandez to Commit 2 or More Fouls

Chelsea Liverpool games aren’t as spicy as when I was playing in them but there’ll always be a few fouls in these games, and Enzo Fernandez in midfield seems as likely as anyone to give away a few. He is Argentinian after all.
