Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour of the Premier League begins with a match against Chelsea on Wednesday evening. Manchester City have clearly been Liverpool’s main rival for silverware during his time in England, and the two Champions League final defeats to Real Madrid will always sting.

But as things stand, Klopp’s last two major trophies came against Chelsea, as did the UEFA Super Cup. He will face them again in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on February 25 too. The Blues can have a huge say in how successful Klopp’s final campaign is.

Liverpool to Win

Paddy has Liverpool as red-hot favourites to win and the underlying data from this season suggests their price should be even shorter if anything. This shows how strong Klopp’s boys have been at Anfield, as Chelsea’s expected goal stats have been surprisingly impressive in 2023/24. Putting the ball in the net has been the problem.

Liverpool have had no such concerns, especially at Anfield. They’ve averaged a shade over three goals per game at home in all competitions and have hit four-or-more in five of the last eight matches there.

Where they have had trouble in recent years is beating Chelsea. The last seven meetings have ended all square in 90 minutes, making it the longest run of consecutive draws between top flight clubs in English football history. The Blues have won this specific fixture more recently than the Reds too (2021 versus 2020).

It takes a brave or foolish person to bet against Liverpool at Anfield though. They have played 25 matches there since a 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid last February, winning 21 and drawing four of them with a positive goal difference of +2.04 per match.

Klopp is one victory away from reaching 200 in the Premier League, and his long goodbye in the competition should start with him reaching his double century thanks to a Liverpool win.

Both Teams to Score

Only seven teams in the division have played fewer matches in which both teams scored than Chelsea in 2023/24, in part thanks to their hapless finishing. However, it’s worth a closer look at their record.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have played eight games against teams who start the match week ahead of them in the table, with only one not seeing both teams score. And although the Reds are joint-top of the Premier League for clean sheets this season, the last five visiting teams at Anfield found the back of the net.

Had Manchester United shown a little more ambition in their goalless draw there then Liverpool could easily have conceded in its last seven home matches. As both teams have scored in six of the nine Klopp-era clashes on Merseyside, back them both to score here too.

Luis Diaz to Score Anytime

In the five games since Mohamed Salah last played for Liverpool, Klopp has changed the front three for each match. The only combination he has deployed more than once has been the trio of Luis Díaz, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Núñez, so will they get the nod here?

The first of that trio looks the likeliest to start, as he was rested for all but 11 minutes of the Reds’ 5-2 FA Cup win over Norwich City on Sunday. Diaz scored in the reverse fixture, has two goals in his last four starts and can thrive from the left against Chelsea just as Sadio Mane did so many times for Liverpool over the years. Back the Colombian to grab a goal.

Under 10.5 Corners

Prior to their recent trip to Old Trafford, Chelsea’s away games against other Big Six sides tended to be low on corners. None of the preceding eight such matches saw more than 11 and they averaged just 8.6.

As the last three league meetings of these teams had no more than 10 corners, and only two teams in the Premier League have had fewer matches with Over 10.5 corners than the Blues in 2023/24, it makes sense to take the under.

It’s also sensible to assume Liverpool will win the corner count, as they have in the last eight league meetings of these teams and they always dominate the attacking at Anfield.

Over 3.5 Cards

“I have no problem with referees, only you.” As Klopp was talking about Paul Tierney, the man in charge of this match, I’d say he has at least one problem with referees, wouldn’t you? The Wigan-born whistler has given Liverpool as many red cards as penalties over the years, so perhaps Klopp has a point.

Anyway, Tierney has averaged the second fewest yellow cards per game among the 16 refs who’ve done at least 16 Premier League matches this season. He can expect to be busier than normal here though.

Chelsea’s matches have averaged an enormous 5.8 cards this season and every single one has featured at least four, so Over 3.5 Cards looks as safe as houses. It doesn’t count if Klopp gets one though.
