Equatorial Guinea v Guinea Bissau
Group A game at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara, Abidjan
TV: Sky Sports Football & Main Event, 2pm
Best Bet: Both Teams to Score
Equatorial Guinea began this AFCON camping with a respectable draw against Nigeria while Guinea Bissau lost 2-0 to the hosts on the opening night. They’re a decent outfit having won five and drawn six over their last 11 fixtures.
Guinea Bissau’s results in the run-up to the championship haven’t been great with just one win over their last five, drawing one, and losing three. However, they’ve scored four over their last five and won three of their prior five games. This is a must-win for both sides as it represents their best chance of grabbing second or third spot so we’re expecting Both Teams to Score to land.
Long Shot: Equatorial Guinea to Win 2-1
Equatorial Guinea’s superior form swings us towards picking them as the winners. They’ve played far tougher teams of late too and that experience should see them over the line. A 2-1 scoreline looks like a good shout for a long shot.
Ivory Coast v Nigeria
Group A game at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara, Abidjan
TV: Sky Sports Football & Main Event, 5pm
Best Bet: Over 2.5 Goals
Hosts Ivory Coast can get one foot into the Last 16 but after their opening Group A draw with Equatorial Guinea. Nigeria will need at least a draw here to stay in the reckoning as they’ll more than likely beat Guinea Bissau in their final game. But, they’re not going to want to leave it to chance.
The hosts have lost just one of their last 10 fixtures, winning seven, and drawing two, while the Super Eagles have won just one of their last five, drawing three and losing one. You’d have to fancy goals here, the Ivorians have scored 19 over their last five while Nigeria have netted six and the odds on Over 2.5 Goals are just too good to turn our noses up at.
Long Shot: Seko Fofana to Score
We need to have a look at former Fulham and Udinese midfielder Seko Fofana here. He’s only played 12 times for the Elephants but has scored a rather healthy six goals. Before departing to Al Nassr in the Saudi league, he scored 15 goals over his last two seasons for Lens too. With three goals over his last four for the national side, he’s certainly worth having a punt on for a long shot.
Egypt v Ghana
Group B game at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Abidjan
TV: Sky Sports Football & Main Event, 8pm
Best Bet: Egypt to Win
Mohamed Salah’s late injury-time penalty saved Egyptian blushes on Sunday last as he rescued a point in their opening game against Mozambique. Ghana were surprise losers to Cape Verde too so both sides can’t really settle for anything less than a win here. This should be a tense affair.
The Pharoahs though have lost just one of their last 15 fixtures while Ghana have won just one of their last six. As per usual against Egypt, teams sit back and try to frustrate them but Ghana have to win here so will have to come out and as time ticks down Egypt definitely have the firepower to punish them when they do leave space open. Egypt to Win is the best bet.
Long Shot: Mohamed Salah First Goalscorer
We can’t really ignore Liverpool’s Egyptian King, can we? He’s just an amazing footballer, scoring 14 in the Premier League this season, as well as one in the League Cup and three in Europe. For the national side, at senior level, he’s scored 49 goals in 65 appearances. He’s also scored five over his last five for Rui Vitoria’s side so he’s a decent shout to open the scoring.
