Chelsea vs Newcastle
Carabao Cup, Tuesday, 8:00pm
Sky Sports Main Event
We’ve reached the business end of the Carabao Cup this week with the quarterfinal stage. There’s three League Cup QFs this Tuesday, the most fascinating of which is Chelsea vs Newcastle. The West London team would love to get back to trophy winning ways, while last year’s beaten finalists would love to win their first trophy in a generation.
The best way to enjoy a bet on this game has to be with a Bet Builder, so don’t miss our 8/1 Bet Builder on Chelsea vs Newcastle.
Both Teams to Score – Yes
One thing both teams have in common are injuries at the back, with Chelsea missing Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Wesley Fofana, three players who would improve the defence. Likewise Newcastle will be without Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier, as well as goalkeeper Nick Pope and have only just welcome Sven Botman back to the team.
Because of the injuries and suspensions in both teams I’m expecting to see plenty of goals here, especially given that they’ve scored a combined 64 Premier League goals between the clubs. There’s a lot of potential attacking difference makers for both sides.
Cole Palmer to have 1 or more shots on target
Speaking of difference makers, step forward Cole Palmer. The young Englishman has been superb since arriving from Man City. He’s scored six Premier League goals despite four of his 10 appearances coming from the bench.
He also ranks second in the Chelsea squad in terms of shots per game, averaging 2.2 per match. He is great at getting into dangerous positions and I expect him to get a couple of shots off here, with at least one going on target.
Christopher Nkunku to commit 1 or more fouls
The Frenchman hasn’t yet played for Chelsea since his summer move from RB Leipzig but he was on the bench against Sheffield United and will surely play some part here. When he comes on I think he’ll be raring to make an impression, chasing down every loose ball and putting himself about. Not only that but he’s not going to be 100% match fit, which only increases the chances of him diving in late and giving up a foul.
Bruno Guimaraes to commit 1 or more fouls in the first half
Only Joelinton gives up more fouls per game than Bruno Guimaraes for Newcastle, who has averaged 1.5 per game in the Premier League this season. With this being a hugely important cup game for Newcastle I think we’re going to see the Brazilian assert his dominance by starting the game hard and quick, giving up a foul in the process.
Bruno Guimaraes to be fouled 2 or more times
As well as frequently giving up fouls we’ve also seen Guimaraes fouled a lot this season. He’s been taking down 2.4 times per game on average, some distance ahead of the next nearest Newcastle player, Anthony Gordon, who gets fouled 2.0 times per game.
Given the lose and you’re out nature of cup competition I think we’re likely to see some rash tackles, with Chelsea third in the Premier League when it comes to fouls per game, with an average of 12.3.
