Tuesday 6pm: Uwara Reds v Manchester City
Club World Cup match at King Abdullah Sports City, Saudi Arabia
TV: TNT Sports 2 and FIFA+

Manchester City (-1)

Manchester City have struggled for form in recent weeks, winning just one of their last six games in the league and falling five points behind league leaders Arsenal. City’s league campaign has been uncharacteristically poor, picking up the fewest points under Pep Guardiola after 17 league games.

However, they have a chance to gain some momentum against demonstrably inferior opposition at the Club World Cup. Guardiola’s side face Urawa Red Diamonds in the Club World Cup semi-finals, a side that is currently fourth in the J1 League.

The Japanese side also picked up just seven points in six AFC Champions League games and stuttered by Mexican side León in the previous round of the Club World Cup. The gulf in quality and finances between the two sides is colossal and City should enjoy a comfortable win on Tuesday night.

Both Teams To Score

City’s defensive woes have been the reason for their below-par performances this season. Guardiola’s side have conceded 30 goals in all competitions this season and have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last eight games, conceding 16 goals in the process.

There is a good chance that City concede on Tuesday, even with all of the advantages they enjoy. Despite winning the tournament on an almost annual basis, European champions have not exactly been rock solid at the back in recent Club World Cups.

In the last six tournaments, only Chelsea (2021) and Bayern Munich (2020) have kept clean sheets in the Club World Cup semi-final, while only two of five English Champions League winners have kept clean sheets in the last four since the tournament’s inception.

There is a possibility that City will suffer from complacency given the enormous advantages that they enjoy and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Urawa find the back of the net.

Phil Foden To Score Anytime

Phil Foden was the villain of City’s recent draw with Crystal Palace, conceding a needless stoppage time penalty to hand Palace a famous draw. However, he represents good value to find the back of the net on Tuesday given Erling Haaland’s recent fitness issues and Julian Alvarez’s struggles in front of goal.

Foden has scored seven goals in the league and Champions League for City this season and averages over two shots per game. He averaged 3.8 shots per game in the Champions League group stages, where City enjoyed almost complete superiority over each of their opponents.

They will enjoy even more dominance at the Club World Cup and Foden, who scored three times in four Champions League starts, can make his mark on Tuesday night.

Julian Alvarez Anytime Assist

Julian Alvarez has scored just once in his last 11 appearances for City after a hugely encouraging start to the season, but he remains one of City’s most creative players and the most likely player to register an assist on Tuesday.

Alvarez has registered six league assists this season – the most of any City player – and has registered three assists in his last seven games. With both Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne out injured, Alvarez is the most creative player at Guardiola’s disposal for the upcoming Club World Cup.

Alvarez averages 2.4 key passes per game in the league this season – the most of any City player – and is good value to register an assist against Urawa.

Urawa Yo Have 3 Or More Shots On Target

City have been far more open at the back this season than any of their previous campaigns under Guardiola. The treble winners have faced an average of 8.1 shots per game in the Premier League, the first time their average has been over 8 shots per game since Guardiola took over.

In their last eight games in all competitions, City have faced 36 shots on target, an average of 4.5 per game. There is a very good chance that Urawa will cause them problems on Tuesday.
