After a long summer domestic football is finally back and, in particular, the most exciting and unpredictable league in the world, the mighty EFL Championship. Fortunately for us that means that this Sunday we’re being treated to a triple threat of back-to-back games featuring some of the most exciting storylines in this year’s Championship.
First up we have the recently-relegared Leicester City against Coventry City. We all know the magic of Leicester’s incredible Premier League title but that was a long time ago and they’re going to have to try and bounce back at the first time of asking. Beating the defeated playoff finalists Coventry won’t be any easy task and the midlands club want to start the season with a bang.

Elsewhere we have another dropout from the Premier League with Leeds starting their Championship campaign at Elland Road against Cardiff. It took them ages claw their way out of this league last time and they simply can’t afford to start slowly.
Then our final game sees Sunderland hosting Ipswich. Ipswich, widely acclaimed to be the “best League One team ever” despite finishing second, will put up a fight and might be able to take on a Sunderland team without Amad Diallo, who returned to Manchester United after his loan.

Kelechi Iheanacho to Score Anytime
The most difficult things for teams in the Championship is scoring goals but fortunately for Leicester they currently have all three of their main strikers from last year in Kelechi Iheanacho, Patson Daka and Jamie Vardy.
Iheanacho only scored five Premier League goals last year but you have to consider that of his 28 appearances only 11 were starts. Despite being largely an option from the bench he still have 1.4 shots per game. He’s set to start on Sunday and his movement should cause serious issues at this level so Iheanacho to Score Anytime has a good feel about it.
Leicester to win
Just nine teams scored more goals than Leicester in the Premier League last season, which tells you were their problems lay. Fortunately their defence will be better at this level and we know that the likes of Harry Souttar can perform exceptionally well in the Championship.
Coventry really excelled last season and you can’t fault the job that Mark Robins did, which saw the team fly up the table. That said, they’ve lost their best player in Viktor Gyokeres and on top of that he’ll need to fire his team up again after that huge disappointment in May. It really feels like there’s a quality gap between these two teams and Leicester should get the three points here.

Mahlon Romeo to commit one or more fouls
Leeds are without a number of first-team players in Patrick Bamford and Tyler Adams but there’s one thing that Leeds will have and that’s electric pace. Daniel James and Crysencio Summerville should start and we might see Wilfried Gnoto make the first XI despite speculation around a transfer away from the club.
That pace will cause problems for Cardiff and I think that will create issues for Cardiff right back Mahlon Romeo, who I’m backing to commit one or more fouls. Last season he averaged 1.6 tackles per game in the Championship and committed 0.8 fouls per game. He’s going to have a difficult Sunday and looks a great pick to commit a foul.
Both Teams To Score? No
You’ve got to be careful when looking back on statistics from a previous season but in early August it’s all we have and it’s notable that Both Teams to Score only landed in 34.8% of Cardiff’s games on the road last season, with Cardiff failing to score in 13 of their trips on the road. As such, we’re siding with Both Teams To Score? No.

Sam Morsy to be shown a card
Ipswich impressed last season going on an incredible run after Christmas to finish second in the league. One of their key men was Sam Morsy. The Egyptian is an exceptional talent and his really controls the centre of the park for The Tractor Boys.
Last season he picked up 12 bookings in 44 for Ipswich and has picked up double digit numbers for cards in nearly every season he’s played as a starter in the Championship. The odds suggest Morsy’s the most likely player to get booked in this game and his history, as well as the task ahead of him, make that an intriguing bet.
Both Teams To Score
These are two clubs who I feel could really push on and have good seasons in the Championship. There is talent throughout both teams and I think that should see both teams start quickly. I’m backing Both Teams To Score in this, their opening game.
We saw Sunderland’s quality in front of goal last season, scoring 68 goals, the fifth highest tally in the league and even without Amad Diallo they will be dangerous again. Meanwhile Ipswich were great last year and in Conor Chaplin they have a huge threat with the number 10 scoring 26 goals last campaign.
