Rangers to Win

Both Kilmarnock and Rangers will come into Saturday’s season opener looking for an improvement on their last campaign. The hosts finished third from bottom last time out, just six points clear of the bottom two. Sure, they shipped plenty of goals but their real issue was scoring, managing just 37 goals of which just 11 were away from home. Fortunately for them they play this game at Rugby Park where they were more clinical last term.

Rangers rightly come into this game as favourites after finishing seven points behind champions Celtic last year. With managerial changes on the other side of Glasgow this is an excellent opportunity for them to take advantage and make a march on the title.
They may have won just once over their preseason but there’s a lot of quality in this Rangers team still and playing the likes of Newcastle, Olympiacos and Hoffenheim is more of a test than Kilmarnock’s recent fixtures, which have seen them pick up three wins in the Scottish League Cup. Rangers are the better team here and most likely will show that by picking up three points.

Danilo to Score Anytime

Rangers may have seen the likes of Antonio Colak and Alfredo Morelos depart but some Brazilian stardust might have been sprinkled over the frontline with the capture of Danilo from Feyenoord. He’s a two-time Eredivisie title winner and bagged 14 goals in all competitions last season and was Michael Beale’s marquee signing this offseason.

It’s always tough to predict how quickly a new signing will adapt to a new league and a new country but given his clinical finishing ability he should be able to start quickly. He started just 19 games up front last year and scored eight in those appearances. So with news that he’s likely to make his debut this Saturday we have to include him here against a Kilmarnock defence that conceded 62 goals last season.

Kyle Magennis to be Shown a Card

In the build-up to this game it’s noticeable that Derek McInnes has highlighted Rangers’ physicality as an area that they’ve improved upon for this season. The Kilmarnock gaffer seems to be expecting a physical battle on Saturday and that means one thing for us, a higher chance of cards.

The man who really leaps off the page here as a potential card magnet is Kilmarnock’s Kyle Magennis. He’s a player who can be a bit disciplined, despite picking up just two yellows and a red in 13 appearances for Hibs last year.

Magennis is going to be in the engine room for this big clash against a superior Rangers team and he’s going to need to use his physicality to disrupt the flow of the game, especially with the likes of Todd Cantwell coming in from wide and moving into central positions to dictate play.

Over 2.5 Goals

We don’t have any Scottish Premiership data to go on for this season yet but if we look back at last season we can see that there were Over 2.5 goals in 52.6% of Kilmarnock’s games at Rugby Park, while the Overs line was smashed in 78.9% of Rangers’ games on the road.

With all the excitement of the new season and the latest transfer arrivals we could be set for an explosive game on Saturday and given that both Scottish Premiership games between these two finished with four or more goals last season, it’s fair to assume we might see something similar again here.

Both Teams to Score

The Both Teams to Score market is one we’ll also be attacking for this game. As good as Rangers were last season, losing just four league games, they did give their opposition chances to score. In fact, we saw both teams scoring in 57.9% of Rangers’ games away from Ibrox and given the amount of new signings this season, including a new goalkeeper, it wouldn’t be a surprise if it took them some time to solidify defensively.

Even more interesting is that despite goal scoring struggles last season, Kilmarnock scored in all but three of their home games, with a loud Rugby Park driving them forward. There’s obviously been a good deal of churn in players for both squads since January but Kilmarnock scored twice when these teams last met in a 5-2 defeat.
