Friday 8pm: Sheffield Wednesday v Southampton
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football
The Draw
Sheffield Wednesday host Southampton in the opening game of the Championship season on Friday night, a game that would have seen Premier League take on League One just three months ago. As such, it’s hard to tell where either team are at, with both sides on very different trajectories.
Both sides have changed managers over the summer, with Southampton unsurprisingly replacing Ruben Selles after a run of two wins from their last 17 games ensured Southampton’s return to the Championship for the first time since 2012. New manager Russell Martin represents a gamble and it will be interesting to see how he deals with the ongoing exodus of players at the club.

It was far more surprising when Sheffield Wednesday decided to part ways with Darren Moore, who guided the club back to the Championship via the playoffs after recording a hugely impressive 96 points in League One last season. Xisco Munoz again represents a gamble.
The Spaniard’s only other stint in England was a success, guiding Watford back to the Premier League, but he was sacked just a few weeks into their Premier League campaign. However, sackings by Watford are so common that it can hardly be counted as a strike against him.
With so much change taking place at both clubs, Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday would arguably both be satisfied with A Draw on the opening day of the season. For Wednesday, it would mean avoiding defeat against a former Premier League club, while Southampton would have avoided defeat after a turbulent summer that saw them fail to win a single pre-season friendly.
Both Teams To Score
Southampton had the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League last season, conceding 73 goals in 38 games. With the exception of Ryan Manning, they have not brought in any defensive reinforcements and could struggle to keep goals out in the Championship this season.
Sheffield Wednesday scored an impressive 81 goals in League One last season and have every chance of breaching the Southampton defence on Friday night. Southampton, on the other hand, still possess exciting attacking players, despite their long list of departures and potential departures.
They should have enough to find the back of the Wednesday net at least once. Both Teams To Score looks a solid play.
Che Adams to Have 2 or More Shots on Target
Che Adams is one of those players to be linked with a move away from St. Mary’s, with Everton and Nottingham Forest among his potential suitors. For the moment, however, Adams remains a Southampton player and will surely start at Hillsborough on Friday.
Adams was Southampton’s second-highest goalscorer last season, scoring 10 goals in all competitions. The 27-year-old averaged 1.7 shots per game in the Premier League last season and is likely to enjoy more opportunities in a lower league. Adams is good value to register 2 or More Shots on Target on Friday night.
Over 9.5 Corners
In their last six games of the Premier League season, Southampton won 27 corners at an average of just under five per game. Considering they were a relegation-threatened team often playing with less than 50% of the ball, they can expect that average to rise in the Championship this year.
Southampton are likely to dominate the ball in most games they play and Friday night should be no exception. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them considerably better their recent corner average on Friday night.
Sheffield Wednesday, meanwhile, will be desperate to give their fans something to cheer on their first day back in the Championship and are likely to put the Saints under pressure. They should win a few corners of their own so we’ll side with Over 9.5.
Over 3.5 Cards
Southampton averaged just under two cards per game in the Premier League last season, picking up 73 bookings and no red cards in 38 games. Wednesday, meanwhile, collected 74 yellow cards and three red cards in 46 regular season games, an average of close to two per game.
Both sides will be keen to make an impression on Friday night and it wouldn’t be surprising if there a significant number of bookings at Hillsborough. We’ll close out with Over 3.5 Cards.
