Spain to win
Saturday’s Euro U21 final sees a clash between the two best teams in the tournament, although England have been far more convincing than Spain so far. England have won every game at the competition without breaking sweat and are yet to concede a goal.
Spain, on the other hand, needed a last minute equaliser against Ukraine to top their group before needing extra-time to overcome an average Switzerland side in the last eight. However, they appear to have found form at just the right time, thumping Ukraine 5-1 in their semi-final meeting.
They have been incredibly dominant at U21 level in recent years, winning three of the last five European championships and, like Sevilla in the Europa League, appear to have a strange habit of winning the tournament even if they don’t look that good.
England, meanwhile, are playing in their first U21 final since losing 4-0 to Germany in 2009. They have not won the competition since 1984 but may be forced to prolong that wait on Saturday with a Spain Win.
Over 2.5 Goals
England are yet to concede at the Euros and boast by far the best defensive record at the competition, but they have yet to face a side like Spain. They have so far come up against underwhelming opposition, including an extremely disappointing German outfit and an average Czech team.
They also played Israel twice, a side that only qualified by beating Ireland in a penalty shootout. Their quarter-final win over Portugal was their only real test so far and they may come into this final somewhat undercooked.
Spain, on the other hand, have scored the most goals in the competition and stand the best chance of breaking down this English defence. They have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last three games, however, and may have to score twice if they are to win on Saturday so Over 2.5 Goals is the way to go.
Over 2.5 Spain Cards
Spain boast one of the better disciplinary records in the competition, picking up six yellow cards in five games to date, but they have received four cards in two knockout games – a considerable deterioration in their disciplinary record.
It is hardly surprising, given that knockout games involve far more tension and players are more likely to commit fouls for the good of the team. Saturday’s final is likely to be no different.
If Spain find themselves a goal up in the dying stages, they are likely to commit cynical fouls to prevent England from building up a head of steam, while they are equally likely to give away yellow cards out of frustration if they find themselves losing the game. There is a good chance that Spain pick up Over 2.5 Cards during Saturday’s decider.
Anthony Gordon to Have 2 or More Shots on Target
Anthony Gordon is one of several English players to be enjoying a fine tournament so far. The Newcastle winger has scored twice at the Euros, England’s winner in their 1-0 win over Portugal and the opening goal in their 2-0 win over Israel in the group stages.
The 22-year-old averaged 1.6 shots per game for Everton in the Premier League last season before moving to Newcastle where he saw his average drop considerably as his gametime was mostly limited to cameo appearances. He has been one of England’s most threatening players at the tournament and is likely to cause problems for the Spanish defence on Saturday so we’ll finish with Anthony Gordon to Have 2 or More Shots on Target.
