Well, we’ve now reached a lull in the footballing calendar. The domestic stuff is over, the international stuff is over and all that is left are those weird YouTubers who fixate over fixtures lists for six weeks. In the famous words of Eamon Dunphy – not for me, Bill.
We’re four weeks from the Women’s World Cup, and that means over the next 28 days we can begin to fill our boots with the League of Ireland, in the hope that when we get absolutely hammered by Australia on opening day, we can claim we’re more concerned with our own league anyway.
The mid-season break gets a lot of flak but I quite like the reset. It gives people fresh hope. Unless you’re a UCD fan of course.
Bohemians v Shamrock Rovers – Rovers to Win
There’s a couple of things that sway people’s minds when it comes to this fixture. The first one is that it’s a derby so it’s totally unpredictable. That’s not true however. Rovers have won the last two meetings between the sides by multiple goals, and have won five of the last six.
Bohs have started the season well but it amounts to very little given Rovers are at least twelve points better than their cross-city rivals. This is the price of the season. Rovers have this one.
Derry City v Cork City – Over 2.5 Goals
Cork will have begun the season trying to keep it tight and focus on being hard to beat. That outlook has since expired and the focus now is primarily on being competitive because they won’t be finishing bottom.
They’re incredibly back-to-front which makes them a good foil for Derry City who frequently overload the left side – the channel that Tunde Owalabi exploits time and time again to much success.
Derry have had a regroup now, one that was much needed, and I anticipate this being the game that decides whether or not they’ll be taken seriously in a title race. Three goals should be on the menu.

Drogheda v Dundalk – Both Teams to Score
This is the most exciting derby in Ireland for the sheer drama that comes with it. There’s always goals, cards and an incident that becomes the talking point for at least a month. Drogs really struggle when playing two games in four days, but the break will have helped them more than most.
Dundalk? Well, for all that they’ve underwhelmed, they’re either winning games convincingly or shipping goals left and right. Either outcome should see Both Teams to Score landing.
St. Pat’s v Shelbourne – Under 2.5 Goals
I intentionally haven’t mentioned the Ireland job because that’s a rabbit hole I’m sick of jumping down. But Damien Duff has said multiple times that he’s staying in the country and can’t be tempted away by job offers in England.
First of all – I love you, Damien. And secondly, if he is to grab the Ireland job down the line, he’ll likely be doing it on the basis of keeping clean sheet after clean sheet. Shels have kept five clean sheets over their last eight games. Despite conceding three over their last two, expect to see a return to form against Pat’s and Under 2.5 Goals to be the play.
