Ireland take their second step in the bid to qualify for Euro 2024 tonight when they take on Greece in Athens.

Stephen Kenny’s men currently sit in fourth place within the group after a crushing one nil loss to France in the Aviva Stadium back in March.

Euro 2024 Qualifier – OPAP Arena, Athens

Ireland showed a lot of promise in this game, and would consider themselves unlucky not to have come away with a point after a freak save by Mike Maignan at full stretch to deny Nathan Collins in the dying minutes of the game.

Greece on the other hand, sit second in the group, winning their sole game against Gibraltar in a fairly comprehensive fashion.

Republic of Ireland to Win

The Irish team will view this game as an absolute must win if they’re to pose any sort of a threat in this group. After what was a dismal World Cup qualifying campaign and an uninspired run in the Nations League, the Boys in Green look poised to come into their own in this round of qualifiers.

Kenny’s system is set, the players are well integrated within it, and if you’re trying to compete in a group with the likes of France and the Netherlands, these are the sort of games that you need to see a result in.

Both Teams to Score – Yes

As much as we love to see Gavin Bazunu perform in an Ireland shirt, he had a difficult season debuting as the number one for Southampton. In fairness, he wasn’t helped hugely by the defending (or lack thereof) that was going on around him.

With Greece having attacking talent by way of Celtic’s former striker Giorgios Giakoumakis, and service being provided by the likes of Kostas Tsimikas and Trabsonspor’s Anastasios Bakasetas they won’t be short of attacking options.

Ireland, on the other hand, will be relying on the services of Evan Ferguson in their attacking third to notch his first senior goal for Ireland in a competitive fixture.

Player to Have 2 or More Shots on Target – Evan Ferguson

Speaking of Ferguson, we’re backing him to have two or more shots on target here after a stellar debut season with Brighton where he forced his way into the starting 11.

Ferguson wrapped up his first year at the Amex Stadium with six goals and two assists on the year in just 950 minutes of action – with sights focused firmly on Brighton’s place in the Europa League next term.

Most impressively, Ferguson has a shot conversion rate of 47% – which is immense. He is averaging out at 1.61 shots on target per ninety, and should be firmly in a position to build on this further in this international campaign as he’s provided service from all directions, being at the focal point of the Irish attack.

Away Total Corners – Over 3.5

Ireland have had over 3.5 corners in eight of their last ten games, notably notching eight against France back in March. With big target men like Nathan Collins available in the box for service on these set pieces, and Ireland’s main mode of attack being through blistering counters that force opposition teams onto the back foot – there’ll be plenty of corners in Athens tonight.
