Portsmouth v Port Vale – Portsmouth to Win
We’ll kick off our Saturday EFL acca with one game from our depleted League One fixture list and it’s Port Vale’s trip down south to Portsmouth. Pompey are 9th and are mounting a late playoff push while Vale are 16th but still need a few more wins to cement their place in the third tier next year after promotion last season.
Pompey might have left it too late to crash the top six party, with only 11 games left to play and seven points to make up, but they’re having a good go and have won six of their last nine games, only losing to Barnsley (4th) and Sheffield Wednesday (2nd).
The Valiants are going the other way and have won just two of their last 13 games. Vale have a number of more winnable games coming up while the home side will see this as a must win. Everything’s pointing towards a Portsmouth Win here.
Barrow v AFC Wimbledon – Barrow to Win
Our remaining three punts come from League Two and it’s Barrow hosting AFC Wimbledon first up. This is a similar scenario to our first game where the hosts are plotting a playoff spot while the season is petering out for The Dons who are probably safe already in reality.
Barrow are seven points shy of Salford in 7th but have a vastly inferior goal difference. They’re going to try and make it by winning every game 1-0 and there’s been more than one goal on just one occasion in their last eight games. AFC are more entertaining but far less effective and they haven’t won for 11 games and have just one victory in their last 14 games.
The hosts have won three of their last six and are in the far superior form. There’s always the chance Barrow’s games end in a draw because they just don’t score many goals but, with Wimbledon’s awful defence, we’ll back them to get the breakthrough and for Barrow to Win.
Doncaster v Northampton – Northampton to Win
Doncaster in 12th might be planning their summer holidays but Northampton have it all to play for as they sit 4th and are only outside the automatic promotion places on goal difference behind Carlisle. The Cobblers are, obviously, in decent nick and have won four and drawn two of their last six.
Rovers have just one win in their last seven, a 2-1 home triumph against Wimbledon three games ago. Donny are pretty good at home, they’ve taken 31 points from 18 games, but Northampton have an identical record on the road which is the second best in the league.
But, given the way the wind’s blowing at the moment, there’s only one side we can back with any confidence. It’s got to be Northampton to Win.
Gillingham v Carlisle – Carlisle to Win
Our final game takes in the sights and sounds of Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium for the visit of high-flying Carlisle. The away side are just ahead of Northampton as previously mentioned, and are seven points off the leaders Leyton Orient.
But their focus here will be seeing off the Gills who are 19th in League Two as they continue to fight for a top-three place. Gillingham have enjoyed a strong upturn since January but they’ve won just two of their last six games.
Carlisle had won four on the bounce before two draws in their last two, but those were against the teams ranked 2nd and 5th in the league, Stevenage and Bradford. You think they would be happy with those returns at this stage and they will have been targeting this game to get back to winning ways so we’ll wrap up with Carlisle to Win.
