Tuesday 8pm: Newcastle v Southampton, Carabao Cup
TV: Sky Sports Football
Southampton face Newcastle at St James’ Park on Tuesday night trailing 1-0 in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. They’ll have a tough task on their hands in breaking down a Toon defence that has conceded just one goal over their last nine on home soil. We’ve gone through the stats and found the four best value picks for a whopper of a Bet Builder.
Under 2.5 Goals
Newcastle’s impressive defensive record continued in last week’s 1-0 win at St. Mary’s last week. Eddie Howe’s side have conceded in just one of their last 10 games in all competitions and have kept clean sheets in their last nine games in the league and League Cup. They boast by far the best defensive record in the Premier League and appear to be in a very strong position to make a first cup final since 1999.
It’s hard to see them conceding against a Southampton side that has managed just 17 goals in 20 league games this season. Newcastle, on the other hand, have struggled in front of goal in recent weeks, with three of their last four league games finishing 0-0. Their only goal in that four-game spell was a scrappy late winner against Fulham.
Tuesday night’s second leg is likely to be tense and cagey given that so much is riding on it and it wouldn’t be at all surprising if it was another low-scoring affair.
Over 9.5 Corners
Newcastle have won the second-most corners of any Premier League club this season, while their games have seen more corners than any other side. Howe’s side have won an average of 6.4 per game in the league this season, a record only bettered by Liverpool. Their games have seen an average of 10.6 per game and Tuesday’s game is likely to come close to that average.
The Toon have played four home games in all competitions since returning from the World Cup break, winning 37 corners at a rate of over nine per game. They have dominated every home game they have played since the break and are likely to do the same against Southampton.
The visitors, meanwhile, average 4.2 corners per game and should win a few of their own.

Lyanco to be Shown a Card
The visiting side boast one of the best disciplinary records in the Premier League, but the same can’t be said for their Brazilian centre back Lyanco. He has made just 19 appearances and 14 starts in all competitions this season but has picked up six yellow cards, the most of any Southampton player.
The Brazilian averages 1.6 fouls per game in the League Cup and picked up a yellow card in last week’s defeat against Newcastle. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see him do so again.
Alexander Isak to have 2 or more Shots on Target
Alexander Isak has made a real impact since returning to fitness. The Swedish striker has only made five appearances from the bench since returning to action but has scored a crucial late winner against Fulham in the league and set up Newcastle’s winner against Southampton in the League Cup in those games.
Newcastle’s elimination from the FA Cup has given Isak a week to build his fitness ahead of Tuesday night’s second leg and he has surely earned his place in the starting line-up. Isak averages two shots per game in the Premier League and will be one of Newcastle’s most dangerous players if he starts on Tuesday. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him test Gavin Bazunu at least twice.
