Newcastle to Win

Newcastle’s scintillating form has slowed down considerably in recent weeks. Eddie Howe’s side made it six league wins in a row with their 3-0 win at Leicester on Boxing Day but they have since won just one league game out of four, scoring just one goal. A run of three goalless draws in their last four games has seen Newcastle lose ground on the teams above them. Their one convincing performance in recent weeks came in this competition, when they beat Leicester 2-0 to qualify for the last four. 

Southampton, on the other hand, suffered yet another setback in the relegation battle on Saturday after losing at home to Aston Villa. The Saints secured a vital win at Everton last week just days after their excellent League Cup win against Manchester City and had a chance to build some real momentum with a win over Villa but another home defeat has extinguished that and leaves them rooted to the foot of the table.

Newcastle have a great chance to get back to winning ways at St. Mary’s and put one foot in the League Cup final. 

Both Teams to Score, No

Newcastle may be struggling to score goals of late but they are having no problem keeping them out. They have not conceded a league goal in six games in a run ironically stretching back to a 4-1 win at Southampton in early November. They have also kept clean sheets in three of their four League Cup games this season, only conceding against Tranmere in August when Eddie Howe fielded a much-changed team. 

Southampton may have already scored against Newcastle this season, but that goal was a consolation and it’s hard to see them finding the back of the net on Tuesday night.

Miguel Almiron to Score Anytime

Newcastle’s struggles in front of goal correspond directly with the end of Miguel Almiron’s hot streak. Almiron scored in the 3-0 win at Leicester on Boxing Day to make it eight goals in nine league games but he has now failed to score in each of his last six appearances, including four appearances in the Premier League. 

Alexander Isak’s return to fitness is a bonus for Newcastle, but they will need Almiron to hit top form again if they are to reignite their push for the Champions League places. Almiron scored a brilliant goal in Newcastle’s league win at St. Mary’s earlier in the season and will hope to get back to goalscoring ways against a Southampton side that has managed just three clean sheets in all competitions this season. 

Over 10.5 Corners

Only Liverpool have won more corners in the Premier League than Newcastle. The Magpies win an average of 6.4 corners per game, the second-highest in the league alongside Manchester City. They also concede an average of 4.2 corners per game, while their combined total of 10.6 corners per game is the highest in the division. 

Newcastle have won a whopping 73 corners in eight games in all competitions since returning from the World Cup break at a rate of over nine per game, so it stands to reason that they will better their average of 6.4 corners per game. Southampton, on the other hand, win an average of 4.2 corners per game in the league and should at least win a few of their own, especially if they fall behind and are pushing for an equaliser.
