Senegal began their World Cup 2022 with a 2-0 loss to Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands while Qatar were truly atrocious in their 0-2 loss on the opening day of the tournament against Ecuador. The Lions of Teranga are, of course, without the services of Bayern Munich’s Sadio Mane but there’s plenty of quality in this side and they should be bagging the three points here.

Senegal to Win
Without having to qualify the Qatari’s hadn’t played a competitive game, prior to their 0-2 loss last Sunday night, since December. One of those games saw them losing 0-3 to Croatia’s Under 23 team. Over their World Cup warm-up games they beat Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Albania but will face a stern test here against a Senegalise side ranked 18th in the world and 1st in Africa. The best of the sides they met in their warm-up games, Panama, are ranked 63rd in the world.
Qatar have only played two opponents from FIFA’s top 50-ranked teams over the last year; Chile (29) and Canada (41), drawing with Chile and losing 0-2 to Canada. Senegal, thanks to losing their opening game need to get something here and in fairness to them they created plenty of chances against the Dutch with their goalkeeper, Andries Noppert as well as the back four putting in a solid performance. Senegal have pace out wide and strength in the middle of the pitch, they are far better than the host nation and should win pretty comfortably.
Both Teams to Score: No
Senegal came into the World Cup having conceded in just two of their six prior to things getting underway in Qatar. They’re pretty solid defensively, switching between a 4-1-4-1 when without the ball to a 4-2-3-1 when attacking. They made the Dutch work pretty hard for their win and until Cody Gakpo latched onto an inswinging ball from Frenkie de Jong it looks like a stalemate was on the cards. We saw Salernitana’s striker Boulaye Dia filling in for Mane’s role as the most forward striker against the Netherland and he caused a few problems on Monday night. More on him below.
It’s tough to see this Qatari side scoring against a robust Senegalise defence who don’t give up much. They were over-awed and under-prepared for their opening game against Ecuador and seeing their fans leaving the stadium in the second half won’t have done their confidence any good. After their loss against the Netherlands on Monday the Tigers should roar here and keep yet another clean sheet.

Boulaye Dia to Score Anytime
Salernitana took Boulaye Dia on loan from Villarreal this season in the hopes that his goals would lift them up the table. He’s contributed six over his 14 appearances for the Serie A side who have been performing better than expected so far this season. Certainly in Sadio Mane’s shadow in the international side Dia has however, scored one over his five WC qualifiers and against a very weak Qatar backline we reckon he should add to his tally for the season here.
Senegal to Win 2-0
Without Mane the Tigers have lost their main goal-scoring threat and it must be noted that they don’t tend to score loads of goals. They created plenty of chances against the Dutch on Monday afternoon and will, no doubt, create plenty here against a poor Qatar side.
