It’s the business end of the season in the MLS, and there’s the small matter of the end of season play-off positions still to be decided. At 10pm BST on Sunday night, the Western Conference teams kick off to sort out the squabble.

We’ll be sure to look at the televised fixtures, as Portland Timbers travel to Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United host Vancouver Whitecaps, as the teams locked in sixth, seventh, eighth & ninth are all still in with a shout of progression.

To add a little bit more spice to the night – here’s an acca…

Real Salt Lake v Portland Timbers – Portland Double Chance

TV: Sky Sports Football

A big, winner takes all, fixture when it comes to MLS Play-off qualification. Whilst there is a scenario that both sides progress, the easiest thing to guarantee progression is to win.

But home side Real Salt Lake come into the fixture on a poor run of form, just two points in their last five games. Portland have a better outlook – four wins and 13 points in their last six games. But the team from Utah have the home advantage, with the Timbers picking up just three wins on the road this season. It’s tough to call.

Based off form, lets plump for the Timbers on a double chance. Despite their rocky away form, they have picked up four points from their past two away games, and it’s difficult to back a team without a win in five games.

Minnesota United v Vancouver Whitecaps – Both Teams To Score

TV: FreeSports

Just like in the above fixture, both sides have a chance of play-off qualification. Minnesota currently occupy the final play-off place, but are looking over the shoulder to Salt Lake, and the Whitecaps. For the Canadian side, not only must they win, but they need to hope for the Portland Timbers to leave Utah with all three points.

But the Whitecaps will take encouragement from Minnesota’s form at the back end of the Western Conference – taking a solitary point from their last six games, as their form fell off a cliff – scoring just two goals in that time. Vancouver, on the other hand, are on the back of three straight wins – although they all came from BC Place. On the road, they haven’t won for eight games.

We’re backing both teams to score in this one. BTTS has come through in four of Minnesota’s last five home fixtures, and six of Vancouver’s last seven away matches. We’re looking for more of the same here, with the added carrot of play-off progression.

LAFC v Nashville – LAFC to win & BTTS

LAFC need just a singular point to guarantee they finish top of the MLS this season. They’ve already secured top spot in the Western Conference, and progression to the latter stages of the play-offs, with their return of 67 points from 33 games, including 21 wins. That includes a 2-1 win at Nashville in the reverse fixture.

The away side come into the game in fifth place in the Western Conference, with an enviable record on the road – with six wins and five draws from their sixteen matches. But, they’ve only picked up two points from their last three games. The home side recovered from three straight defeats in August & September to collect 10 points from their next five games.

We’re backing LAFC to win, and both teams to score. LAFC’s record this season speaks for itself, and of course, they have already beaten Nashville this season. Incidentally, BTTS would have paid out in the 2-1 reverse fixture; and would have also come through in seven of LAFC’s last eight matches; and in four of Nashville’s last five. Let’s have it again here.

Austin v Colorado Rapids – Austin to win & over 2.5 goals

Austin’s season has lost a bit of momentum in recent games, despite the side from Texas sitting comfortably in second place of the Western Conference. Since beating league leaders LAFC 4-1 in an impressive display in August, Austin have recorded just four more points from their past six games.

The Rapids, meanwhile, are on a good run of form, with three wins from their last four games. All of those wins have been at home, though, with their away record far more ropey – the worst in the whole MLS. They’ve accrued just seven points on their travels this season (that’s 16 games), with one win, four draws, and a -25 goal difference.

We can’t back the Rapids based on that run of form, so we’re going for an Austin win & over 2.5 goals. Over 2.5 goals would have come in for all but four Austin games since July (that’s 16 games); and would also have come in for four of the Rapids’ past five away games. Could be a strong shout.
