Tuesday 7:45pm: Aston Villa v Bolton
Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports Football
Aston Villa -2
Aston Villa travel to Bolton for what would have been a staple Premier League fixture in the 2000s. Now separated by two divisions, these sides have made contrasting starts to their respective seasons.
Despite bringing in a number of eye-catching signings over the summer, Villa have struggled in their opening three league games of the season, losing meekly at Bournemouth and Crystal Palace and labouring to an unconvincing win against Everton at Villa Park.
Bolton, on the other hand, have enjoyed a decent start to their League One campaign, taking eight points from their opening five games to sit just outside the play-off places. They also pummelled Salford City 5-1 in the first round of the League Cup.
Truth be told, however, the League Cup is a competition Bolton could do without out, especially if they are to maintain a promotion push throughout the season. It is an unnecessary distraction, and it is doubtful whether too many Bolton fans would be overly upset if they lose on Tuesday.
Villa, on the other hand, could do with a win to boost morale in their camp after a convincing defeat at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Steven Gerrard picked a fairly strong line-up and they should have too much for their League One opponents.
Both Teams to Score? No
Bolton may have put five past Salford in the previous round of the League Cup, but they are unlikely to find such joy against Premier League opposition on Tuesday.
Granted, Villa have not looked watertight at the back at all this season, conceding six goals in their opening three games and failing to keep a clean sheet, but they will hope to overcome these issues against lower-league opposition.
While Bolton scored five in their only League Cup game of the season, they have been decidedly less potent against teams of their own quality.
The Trotters have only scored five goals in their opening five games and are likely to struggle when they face top-flight opposition.

Ollie Watkins to Score Last
Ollie Watkins’ goal was Villa’s only bright spot on a dark day at Selhurst with his crisply taken finish after five minutes giving the visitors the lead last Saturday before Wilfried Zaha took centre stage.
It was the England international’s first goal of the season and he will hope to keep that momentum going ahead of the key clash with West Ham on Sunday. He may not start on Tuesday given that Gerrard is likely to rotate some of his players, but he should at least make an appearance from the bench, making him a good bet for last goalscorer.
Jacob Ramsey to Score Anytime
Jacob Ramsey has emerged as a key player for Villa under Gerrard, starting all three league games so far this season in central midfield.
Ramsey scored six times in 29 starts last season and clearly has an eye for goal.
The 21-year-old averaged just over one shot per game last season and so can be expected to try his luck at least once if he features against Bolton. Villa are likely to dominate both possession and territory, meaning Ramsey is more likely to find himself in a scoring position.
He is good value to bag his first goal of the season.
