Sunday night slap-bang right in the middle of an international break. A footballing wasteland, you’d imagine. Not quite. Thanks to our friends across the pond there’s a handful of games from the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers and the wonderfully madcap MLS to savour.

It’s Sunday Night Football but our protagonists will actually be kicking it and the body armour will be kept to an absolute minimum. Just to keep you on your toes the kick off times are spread out throughout the night.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

We’ve got MLS new boys Charlotte FC taking on FC Cincinnati at 9pm before Canada v Jamaica where the hosts just need a point to book their place in Qatar. Then El Salvador take on Costa Rica, who need to win to keep their hopes alive, before we finish back where we started with Kansas City v Real Salt Lake.

So, saddle up for a serving of Stateside soccer with an occasional Caribbean twist to see out the weekend. I’ve found four flutters with a bit of value to, hopefully, add up to a winning four fold. Let’s take a look.

9pm: Charlotte FC v FC Cincinnati – Charlotte to Win

New teams always struggle in MLS. Why wouldn’t they? Charlotte are no different but they have picked up a win in their first four games as a fully functioning football club. They’ve lost the other three, though.

They might fancy their chances of landing their second-ever win against a Cincinnati side who have won two and lost two in the Eastern Conference so far. Charlotte won last time out, beating the New England Revolution 3-1.

For their part, Cincinnati are on a two-game streak themselves so both teams will be in high spirits. The thing about the MLS, though, is that home advantage is massive, given the size of the country. This is a relatively short trip but, if in doubt, side with the home win – especially in an international break where the stronger teams are considerably weakened.

9.05pm: Canada v Jamaica – Canada to Win & Under 2.5 Goals

Canada are on the brink of a rare World Cup appearance and they need just a point at home to Jamaica on Sunday evening to rubber stamp it. The Canadians are top of CONCACAF qualifying with two games to go while The Reggae Boyz have disappointed in 7th.

The Maple Leafs won’t want to make harder work of it than they have to, especially after losing 1-0 away at Costa Rica last time. That was the first time they failed to win in seven games, though, and you have to fancy them to get over the line.

I like the look of Canada to Win and Under 2.5 Goals. This has landed in four of their last six. They’ve Won to Nil on each of those occasions but, at the much bigger price, I’ll side with the selection.

10.05pm: El Salvador v Costa Rica – Under 1.5 Goals

El Salvador’s World Cup race is run but Costa Rica have a live chance, thanks in no small part to that aforementioned win over Canada last time out. They’re just outside the automatic qualification spots in 4th, the CONCACAF playoff spot.

They’re one point clear of Panama and three behind Mexico and the US. They desperately need to win this match against their 6th-placed hosts to set up a shootout with the US on the final day.

Los Ticos are far from entertaining to watch, their last four matches have produced just three goals. El Salvador are not prolific scorers either, they’ve scored three in their last five, including two against whipping boys Honduras. Under 1.5 Goals might be a great play at a handsome price.

11pm: Kansas City v Real Salt Lake – Salt Lake Win/Draw

We finish in MLS with Real Salt Lake, who sit 2nd in the Western Conference, heading to Kansas who are down in 12th after just four games. Salt Lake are unbeaten with three wins and a draw while KC have won one and lost three. The away side are clearly in the better form then, even though it’s early doors.

I think we can go against the golden MLS rule of ‘back the home side’ by going with Salt Lake Win/Draw Double Chance. The Utah side have already picked up four points from their two away games this term and I’m backing them to keep their momentum rolling by avoiding defeat once again.
