The Champions League is back after it’s winter hiatus and who better to get us back underway than last year’s finalists and perennial favourites Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side lead the way in Paddy’s outright odds markets and should have a breeze to the quarter-finals with Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon standing in their way.
Paddy Power’s top ambassador Phil Thompson certainly thinks the defending Premier League champions will have too much in this away trip and has delivered his verdict on Sporting Lisbon v Manchester City below.
Sporting Lisbon v Manchester City: Champions League Last 16, first-leg Tuesday, February 15: 8pm BT Sport 2
THOMMO: I backed Manchester City for a resounding win at Norwich last weekend and they duly did the business with a 4-0 thumping.
I’m going for something similar here. I fancy City to be 3-0 winners.
In the Premier League they’re unbeaten in 12 away – winning 10. It shows you that even on the road just how good this City side is.
I think Pep is saving some of his bigger players for the Champions League too.
The Portuguese league isn’t as strong as in England. Sporting are second in the table, six points behind Porto. They played each other last Friday and there were FIVE red cards! Three for Porto, two for Sporting.
Those players will be able to play in the Champions League, of course, but it points to them being very volatile, because it was a huge match.
So, based on that, along with Manchester City to Win 3-0, it’s got to be worth looking at a Sporting Lisbon to have a Red Card. Home Team Total Cards Over 3.5 could be a good alternative too.
Based on that discipline, you can’t rule out a penalty being awarded, and that’s why I fancy Riyad Mahrez to Score Anytime.
He’s in great form and think before the weekend he’d got seven in his last seven for City, so he’s one to look at here.
