Brentford have stuck their neck out and signed Christian Eriksen. It could be the moment that really kicks them on this year. However, they just they can’t stop conceding goals – and Man City are up next.
For context, Brentford’s gung-ho approach has seen them concede multiple times in every single Premier League game they’ve played since the beginning of December. Except against… Man City.
This tie is intriguing for a number of reasons. Lets take a look and make a few quid for our troubles.
Man City v Brentford – Wednesday, February 9th: 7.45pm BT Sport 1
Man City pick and choose how they win games. It’s a funny little trend. Earlier in the year, they were hammering teams. Then they began to concede late consolations and it slipped into games where it was a touch closer.
They went on a tear where they hammered Leeds, Newcastle and Leicester, before a run of games where they’ve started conceding early and overcoming it. Fulham in the cup, Arsenal and Southampton in the league. Their games are tighter now and they’re having to do things under pressure. Given Brentford’s nature of scoring in four of their last five defeats, I suspect they’ll get at least one here.
And if you’re backing Brentford to net, you really don’t want to have the tough position where City are limited to just scoring twice. A lot of people point to the negatives when it comes to them not having one main goalscorer, but I think helps when your #9 is out of form.
Now the goals come from everywhere and I can see the same happening here.
I love that Sterling is on somewhat of a down year despite scoring every 2.5 games in the league and in every third game in all competitions. It speaks to how good he is, really. And I’d back him to score here having hit somewhat of a barren patch. With him, it’s all about the end-of-year totals and he doesn’t really do streaks. That’s helpful to us as we know he’s overdue.
City are now a side in autopilot and not being flashy. Especially with the Champions League coming up at the end of the month. Once the game is put to bed, it’ll turn into a procession. Brentford’s Christian Norgaard has six yellow cards this season (Ruben Neves and Mohamed Salisu top the charts with seven), and the Dane could well add to that tally as he tried to stop the hosts in their tracks.
