If Liverpool great and Paddy Power ambassador Phil Thompson had his way both teams involved in the Manchester derby would lose. While Thommo can do a lot of things he can’t change the rules of football so he’s going to have to pick at least one of these grand old teams to get something with his Manchester United v Manchester City betting tips.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
United look to be in disarray and needed another late Cristiano Ronaldo inspired comeback to avoid defeat in the Champions League. City suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Palace in the Premier League last weekend and will be looking to bounce back in style.
Despite what the devil on Thommo’s shoulder might be telling him he’s remained as professional as ever to deliver his preview for the Manchester derby on Saturday. Here he is with his unshakingly fair, balanced and impartial take on the biggest game of the weekend. No, seriously.
Saturday 12.30pm: Manchester United v Manchester City
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League
I was listening to Rio Ferdinand on BT and he went, ‘This is the worst time to play Manchester City.’ And I know, as a footballer, where he’s coming from because they’ve just been hurt and you don’t go and poke the bear, do you?
That’s what’s happened with Manchester City losing 2-0 against Crystal Palace. You’re thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, they’re going to be angry, they’re going to be up for it, it’s a derby game.’
Manchester United are so venerable at the back. I know they had a great victory against Spurs to keep a clean sheet which they’ll be delighted with. The thing about Manchester United is they’ve scored 19 goals, all from open play which is quite astonishing considering all the penalties they got last year.
You look at City and the amazing thing was they hadn’t conceded at home all season until those two goals last week by Palace. You always look for penalty takers in the goalscorer markets, don’t you? I’m thinking Riyad Mahrez to score. I’m still going for Mahrez but City have missed five of their last 10 penalties.
But, Manchester fans, who is Thommo’s bet? I’m going to go for Manchester City to Win this one but I think it will be very close. It’s not going to be a 5-0 I don’t think. I’m going Both Teams To Score in this one and I am going for Mahrez to Score Anytime.
I think it will be a good game and I’m looking forward to this one immensely. My NAP is Manchester City to Win and Both Teams to Score.
