Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ‘s wonder strike during a training session has won the clubs’s Goal of the Month award for August.
The Gabonese hitman took the prize for an outrageous ‘rabona’ effort which sailed into the top corner of an empty net as players stretched before the start of a drill.
Aubameyang fought off stiff competition from Rob Holding for his spectacular own goal during a 5-a-side game at London Colney and an absolute peach of a lob scored by Gunnersaurus in an online FIFA tournament between players and staff.
The 32-year-old acknowledged the award while on international duty in an Instagram post which read:
‘It’s an honour to receive this prestigious award. And to be fair, it was an absolute pearler.
“Although it was somewhat tarnished by the fact Leno was scratching his b*llocks and looking the other way’.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta waxed lyrical about the strike, describing it as the most astonishing thing he’s seen Aubameyang do in training since that one morning he arrived on time.
‘I’m pleased for Auba. It’s nice to be able to celebrate something other than the player’s birthdays on social media’, the Spaniard told Paddy Power News.
‘Rob’s (Holding) O.G. was a scorcher but Auba’s rabona into an unguarded goal was genuinely world class’.
Meanwhile, Bukayo Saka’s headed goal for England against Andorra yesterday is leading the way for Arsenal’s September Goal of the Month contenders.
The 20-year-old nodded in the Three Lion’s fourth goal from Jesse Lingard’s cross after the Manchester United hot prospect helped himself to a brace.
Lingard’s starring role in England’s win did not go unnoticed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who confirmed the midfielder will feature prominently in the heart of United’s substitute bench alongside Donny van de Beek this season.
‘Jessie-y and Donny-y have formed a formidable partnership on the bench’, the Norwegian told Paddy Power News.
‘Unfortunately, neither of them are called Fred so they won’t play. Which is a shame because Freddy van de Beek has a nice ring to it’, he grinned.
