Ah, international football. It’s a bit like when your missus rings you to tell you she’s on the way home from work and she’s gotten you a bite to eat from the takeaway – only to find out that she’s gone for the crackers, grapes and a cheeseboard.
Yes, you’re grateful you don’t have to do any cooking or washing-up, but at the end of the day, it’s no chippy tea. We’d all appreciate a Champions League matchday card to choose from, and especially as we’re just past the Euros with an exceptionally long international break – I feel like this is slight overkill.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
But do you know what never feels like overkill? A winning acca. I’m 11 from 14 in my 3pm BTTS accas so far in the Premier League so far, and not to jinx it, but international football is a touch easier to predict, too.
So, spin that globe, point your finger at a random space and wait for it to stop – we’re back on the World Cup qualifier buzz in Europe, where countries your Da thinks are still part of Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union do battle to lose to England. Here’s your winning bet for the 7.45pm kick-offs on Wednesday – oh and to save time, every one of these selections is a Yes in Both Teams to Score market.

Luxembourg v Azerbaijan
TV: Sky Sports Red Button
I love these fixtures. Because when people anticipate weak nations playing each other, they immediately presume a scoreless draw like these fixtures aren’t relative. Just because neither of these teams could score against France does not mean they believe the nets are on the sideline – they just couldn’t get close enough to the bloody goals in the first place.
And come to think of it, Luxembourg went to Dublin and scored and now I immediately remember why I hate international football again. Next.
Norway v Netherlands
TV: Sky Sports Red Button
Erling Haaland and Memphis Depay are two of the best forwards on the planet right now, but that’s not the lone reason as to why I’m suggesting this. That logic leaves you very, very broke.
Norway might have one of the best strikers on the planet, but their approach of being too conservative not only cost them a place at the Euros but has also seen tense affairs or downright embarrassments in their efforts at World Cup qualifying so far, too.
They took 45 minutes to score in Gibraltar and barely snuck past Montenegro. That should change here, even with Virgil van Dijk back to anchor the side, they’re going to need a result after the loss to Turkey set them back some.
Russia v Croatia
TV: Sky Sports Red Button
Ah yes, the Russians. It’s never straightforward, meaning they’re always a cracking leg to throw into these bets.
They even shipped to Malta when coasting back in March. There’s just something about them always needing to do things the hard way. At times it’s tricky to know whether that’s a psychological issue or an executive order from Putin – but it’s one or the other.
Slovenia v Slovakia
TV: Sky Sports Red Button
As my father, who has absolutely no grasp on geopolitics, cultural identity ties to changing demographics and wars or anywhere outside of a 10km radius of south Dublin, once said – sure aren’t these two just the same country anyway?
By his hypothesis then you would absolutely expect them to cancel the other out, but in fact, they’re both particularly different. Slovakia lack a cutting edge while Slovenia are too loose.
What this generally develops as, is the side who are too loose trying to retain structure, allowing Slovakia big opportunities early on, falling behind, then chasing the game before equalizing and stating that they should have gone for it from the off. Rinse. Repeat.
