I love these early season midweek nights. On the one hand you’ve got the Champions League qualifiers with little and large teams across the continent fighting tooth and nail to make it into the big show and set up 5-0 home and away maulings at the hands of Paris St Germain or Bayern Munich.
On the other you’ve got the likes of Arsenal, Southampton, Burnley and Newcastle trying to avoid any drama while rotating their squad and worrying more about what number out of 20 they will occupy come May. And that’s exactly what’s on the menu on Wednesday night.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
We’ve got Arsenal’s impending car crash away at West Brom covered elsewhere, but we’ll be taking in the sights and sounds of Newcastle v Burnley and Newport v Southampton in the EFL Cup right here.
There’s also the small matter of the remaining Champions League qualification matches and we’ll be taking a look at Dinamo Zagreb v Sheriff Tiraspol and Shakhtar v Monaco. So, without further ado, here’s an acca for Wednesday night’s football.
The below picks in a Paddy Power acca will give you odds of around 26/1. CLICK HERE TO ADD IT TO YOUR BETSLIP.
7.45pm: Newcastle v Burnley – Both Teams To Score? No
Played four, lost four. That’s Newcastle and Burnley’s combined efforts in the Premier League so far with a total of three goals scored between the two and 10 conceded. It’s going to be a long season for this lot, but can the cup provide a nice distraction?
It’s clear that both are better at conceding than scoring but which toothless side will come out on top here? It’s pretty hard to tell as each will be treating this game with trademark disdain.
Instead of picking a winner, I think Both Teams To Score? No might be the way to play as these two fall over themselves to crash out on penalties after a joyless stalemate. We’re also in if one accidentally scores from a cross.
7.45pm: Newport County v Southampton – Over 2.5 Goals
Classic cup fare here as serial giant-killers Newport County host Southampton at Rodney Parade looking to cause another shock. I think they have a pretty good chance of beating a Saints side who will surely have little interest in this competition.
Southampton’s youngsters and reserves won’t have come up against anything like this before. I’m not brave enough to tip up the home win here, instead I think we’ll see County’s League 2 brutality and Saints’ technical ability and fitness combine for us to see Over 2.5 Goals here.

8pm: Dinamo Zagreb v Sheriff Tiraspol – Sheriff and Draw
Sheriff Tiraspol. No, me either. But you might want to start swatting up on the *Googles* Moldavian champions because I think they’re heading for the Champions League group stages. If you’re wondering, yes they do have a sheriff’s badge as the club crest. Anyway, they’ve done well to get this far and they shocked their more-renowned opponents in the first leg 3-0. 3-0!
Wednesday 8pm: Dinamo Zagreb v Sheriff Tiraspol
BT Sport ESPN
They’ve made a bit of a habit of winning their home legs and getting a good result away. Just ask Red Star, Teuta and Alashkert. Dinamo can overturn this, of course they can. But Sheriff are really good away from home. They’re yet to lose on the road this term so, at a bit of a price, it’s worth siding with the visitors (who are way overpriced here) on the Double Chance. It’s Sheriff and The Draw in this one.
8pm: Shakhtar v Monaco – Shakhtar to Win
Shakhtar and Monaco are two of the bigger names still slugging it out in the Champions League qualifiers. Only one can progress and it’s advantage Shakhtar who return to Ukraine with a priceless 1-0 win in the principality.
Wednesday 8pm: Shakhtar v Monaco
BT Sport 1
These two couldn’t be in more contrasting form with Cesc Fabregas’ Ligue 1 lads having lost three in a row. Donetsk have won seven of their eight games this season and I need say no more. At a price that’s too good to be true, we’re on the Shakhtar to Win here.
