It may have felt like an eternity, but in reality it’s been just a month and three days since elite football ended with Italy beating England at Wembley in the final of Euro 2020. Just think of all that has happened during that time: United finally landed Jadon Sancho and bagged Raphael Varane too (although both are unlikely to play Saturday).
Meanwhile, Ezgjan Alioski decided that the Saudi Professional League was the way to go, rather than running marathons every weekend for Marcelo Bielsa.
It would be remiss to overlook the fact Leeds signed Jack Harrison (after three years on loan at the club) and Junior Firpo (snatched from the jaws of a financially crippled Barcelona for just €15 million). Not quite as high profile of some of United’s new signings, but are equally well worthy of a shout out.
We have another exciting season ahead of us, and let’s hope we can open it up with an absolute belter. Now let’s get to looking at what we can use that Free £/€5 Bet Builder on.

Despite a very poor opener against Crystal Palace last season (3-1 Palace – sorry for the reminder Utd fans), the hosts have a fantastic opening weekend record. The Reds have won 19 of the previous 29 fixtures on the first weekend of the season – more than any other club – drawing four and losing six.
With the rivalry between these sides, and a packed out Old Trafford factored into the equation, it’s hard to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side throwing this one away.
A Scott McTominay masterclass back in December of 2020 was the main takeaway from the last time these sides met at Old Trafford, in a thrilling 6-2 win for the hosts. However, with the number of high-profile attacking players United have unavailable or unlikely to appear in this game – namely Marcus Rashford, Sancho and Edinson Cavani – don’t get caught out in thinking this will be a high scoring affair.
The second clash of the season between these sides ended 0-0 at Elland Road, and this one will likely be closer to that scoreline than the eight goals seen in the first fixtures.
Yes, We all know he was sh*t at the Euros, but look- someone had to disappoint the people more than Fernando Santos when he didn’t start cult icon “Noon Mendsh” (apparently how Nuno Mendes is said in Portuguese?) at left back throughout Euro 2020.
Fernandes averages 0.35 assists per game and averages 4.8 shot-creating chances per 90 also. He’s out with a point to prove and odds are he’ll look to carry on from his 18 assists across all competitions in 2020-21 (12 of which came in the Premier League).
Patrick Bamford had a great 2020/21 season in the Premier League with Leeds, with the fourth-most shots in the league and 17 goals in total. He receives great service from the likes of Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Mateusz Klich.
He’ll be well-rested after not playing at the Euros and well-motivated after not even making Gareth Southgate’s one million-strong preliminary squad back in May. One shot on target is very achievable on the opening weekend.
