As Take That once told us, it sometimes works to ‘have a little patience’ and one of our punters took that right to heart when placing an awesome accumulator earlier this month. Our crafty customer made eight excellent selections, but the bet started with games all the way back on May 8 and ran on until last Saturday Champions League final on May 29.
Some people haven’t the patience to wait for a packet of crisps to fall out of a vending machine, never mind wait three weeks for an eight-fold to land. But, that’s exactly what our winner – who hails from London – did, and the reward was £6,120 off only a stake of £10.
We don’t know if our victor was belting out Gary Barlow’s back catalogue in celebration (we would), but the bonkers bet saw off odds of 611/1 to land and it must have been a super Saturday once the final whistle went in the Man City v Chelsea game. Let’s tell you how the cash was claimed.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Our journey began in Liverpool three weeks previous as The Reds welcomed Southampton to Anfield. The Saints were no match for their hosts, as Sadio Mané netted against his old club and Thiago Alcântara grabbed his first goal for Liverpool in a 2-0 win. Also that evening, Fiorentina beat 10-man Lazio by the same scoreline – with Serbian striker Dušan Vlahović banging in a brace to get the show on the road for our punt.
Next on the hitlist was the meeting of freshly crowned Premier League champions Man City and Newcastle at St James’ Park six days later on May 14. Despite a raft of changes in personnel and falling behind twice in the game, Pep Guardiola’s men got the job done in the end to win 4-3, as Ferran Torres helped himself to a hat-trick.
The Championship Play-Off semi-final first legs on May 17 were on the chopping block after that, as our customer selected wins for Bournemouth and Swansea. The Cherries beat Brentford 1-0 in a match in which they would waste a hatful of chances and they would regret not taking them in the end, as The Bees beat them handily in the second leg. Meanwhile, André Ayew was the hero for The Swans as they left Yorkshire with a 1-0 away success on the night.
Our punter didn’t have to wait too long for the next selection on the betslip, as Chelsea hosted Leicester at Stamford Bridge on the following evening. Thankfully for our winner, The Blues gained revenge for their FA Cup final defeat to the Brendan Rodgers-led outfit the previous weekend and scored a 2-1 victory that ended up securing their place in the top four of the league.
What followed was probably the best call of the whole bet, as our customer backed Villarreal to win the Europa League outright on Thursday May 26. The nerves must have been jangling when penalty-after-penalty hit the back of the net, but once David De Gea saw his spot-kick saved, The Yellow Submarines finally had the Europa League trophy in their grasp.
That left just last Saturday’s Champions League final for our clever customer to land the loot and the money was riding on a win for Thomas Tuchel’s outfit. There was no need to worry though, as Chelsea produced a terrific display to see off pre-match favourites Man City and claim their second ever Champions League title.
A first-half strike by Kai Havertz was enough to lead The Blues to European glory and our victor to £6,120. All we can say is: “Welcome to our Punting Hall of Fame”.
