We’ve all had that sinking feeling when the dead-cert lets you down to kibosh your carefully-constructed acca in the final leg. Nothing worse. Well, Paddy was on hand to give a little something back to one team of punters who felt the pain last weekend.
Kevin Power (Paddy insists he’s no relation…) and six pals fire up the WhatsApp group every weekend to submit their selections for an acca syndicate and it was the Premier League’s most-prolific striker who fired a blank against the top-tier’s worst team, Sheffield United, that the crew over €1,400.
Bereft, Kevin reached out to Off The Ball and managed to butter up our top football trader and secret softie Jason Murphy to agree to pay out on the bet despite Kane’s wayward finishing against The Blades’ shambolic backline.

“There’s obviously no such thing as a sure thing in football,” Kevin told Off The Ball, “But it was as close as we could have predicted so when it came down to the last leg we organised a watch along and were aghast as Gareth Bale scored goal after goal and Harry Kane didn’t manage to get involved in any of them. It was quite hard to take to be honest.”
The syndicate correctly predicted Ireland’s own Katie Taylor would beat Natasha Jonas and that Toulouse would beat the -5.5 handicap against the gloriously-named Bordeaux Begles in Rugby Union’s European Champions Cup.
The remaining five punts all came from the world of soccer with one leg voided in the postponed Manchester United v Liverpool clash. They did, however, manage to back Hull to beat Wigan and Norwich to beat Reading which both also clicked.
The big gamble was Chelsea to beat Fulham 2-0 at 5/1 and once that flew in it was all eyes on north London has Tottenham battered Sheffield United 4-0. The only problem? Their bet was Harry Kane to Score Anytime at 4/7 on Sunday.
The lads watched in horror as the England man missed a great chance in the 2nd minute and then Gareth Bale took us back to 2013 with a classy hat-trick while Son Heung-min bagged the other one. How painfully, typically Spursy.
But there is a happy ending as Kevin reached out to share his sob story only for magnanimous Murphy to agree to pay out. Nice, one Jason. You can check out Kevin’s story from around the 37th minute onwards on the embedded tweet above.
