It often takes nerves of steel – or a neck like Donald Trump’s – to take a punt on a correct score, even if you think one team is in for a good trouncing.
There’s a reason 8-2 and 6-1 are way up in treble-figure odds – it’s because they generally only happen to Arsenal.
But some of Paddy’s punters are made of tougher stuff and aren’t afraid of throwing a few quid on a huge scoreline at the ridiculous odds of 200/1 even when the Gooners aren’t involved.
Or one quid anyway.
That’s what happened yesterday evening when one savvy sort stung us at a great price on Man United smashing Southampton 9-0 at Old Trafford.
We’re wondering if this bettor had a premonition of Saints midfielder Alex Jankewitz mistaking Scott McTominay’s thigh for a football in the opening seconds of the game and getting dismissed to set up the drubbing.
Though it looked like United wouldn’t hit those heights for much of the game as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Scott McTomnay – with both legs intact – and a Roman Bednarek own goal built a 6-0 lead for Ole’s army as the clocked ticked past 85 minutes.
But VAR wasn’t happy with that, awarding a penalty to United as well as another Southampton red card to the cursed Bednarek. Bruno Fernandes dispatched the resulting spot-kick before Martial nabbed a second and even Daniel James notched a score in injury time to make it 9-0 and bring in our winner’s big call.
And what a call it was! This is just the third time in Premier League history that a team has lost 9-0!
The most recent nine-goal spanking was also dished out to Southampton in October 2019, when Leicester City dismantled them on their own turf.
While the last one before that was registered by Man United, against Ipswich Town, at Old Trafford way back in March 1995. Andy Cole scored five as the Tractor Boys hurtled towards the relegation trapdoor that season.,
Though this football Nostradamus staked just a pound on the 200/1 shot – much to Paddy’s relief.
