Liverpool have hired Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle to direct their upcoming title presentation on Wednesday night, it has emerged. The Anfield club chose Boyle in the hope he could recreate the type of artistic spectacle witnessed during the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
Noted for its scale, extravagance and duration, Liverpool FC felt the 2012 ceremony was the perfect example of how to completely rip the arse out of a celebration. It’s rumoured the presentation and subsequent extravaganza will last approximately 30 years to coincide with their next league title win in 2050.
The artistic display will include re-enactments of Liverpool’s glory years during the 70s and 80s, completely omitting the Graeme Souness and Roy Evans eras before re-emerging in the early-noughties to remind us all of that night in Istanbul.
After another 15-year gap, we pick things up two years into Jurgen Klopp’s reign, during which time Liverpool finally equal the feats of the mighty Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City. It’s understood the ceremony will somehow include Kenny Dalglish at every opportunity – at his own behest.
Remarking on the spectacle, Boyle told us: “It’s the fairy tale story of one club’s £1.2bn and 30-year quest for a league title. “We’ve tried to encapsulate what Liverpool FC is all about: Throwing roses at themselves.”
But the 63-year-old refused to be drawn on whether we’d be likely to hear the Gerry & The Pacemakers’ classic ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at some point during the proceedings. “You’ll just have to wait and see,” he said with a cheeky grin.
There had also been speculation Liverpool’s famous 1996 FA Cup runners-up side would be making a cameo appearance. The rumour mill kicked into overdrive when Robbie Fowler posted a pic of himself to social media wearing his dashing white cup final suit complete with shades.
45-year-old uploaded the image along with the caption “See you Wednesday, lads” and the hashtag #SpiceBoysReunion However, there appeared to be no Anfield invite extended to disgruntled Liverpool legend Mario Balotelli, who tweeted: “Why never me?”
