Wednesday is all about champions. We’ve got the Champions League, the Championship and the 1991 League Cup champions Sheffield Wednesday all in action.

I’m probably far too pleased with that little intro than I should be, but you’ve got to take the small pleasures in life. To the matter at hand, and here’s a wonderful Wednesday wager for you which all adds up to a fab four-fold acca.

As alluded to, we’ve got both Champions League games covered, that’s Inter Milan v Liverpool and RB Salzburg v Bayern Munch at 8pm. Our Championship match is a basement battle between Peterborough v Reading which kicks off 15 minutes earlier. Talk about stealing the limelight.

We’re dipping our toe into League 1 as well where Sheffield Wednesday host Accrington Stanley at 7.45pm. Come on, let’s try and find some winners.

7.45pm: Peterborough v Reading – Over 2.5 Goals

TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football

It’s a massive clash in the Championship to kick us off as the two best-placed teams out of the four likely to go down face off. Heading into the midweek fixtures Reading are 21st, two points clear of Peterborough in 22nd and the final relegation spot.

These two are in absolutely rank form and The Posh have won just one league match in their last 15 attempts. It’s not much better for The Royals who have lost their last seven on the bounce and have won one of their last 13 second-tier games. Overall it’s a shocking three wins in their last 30 games combined.

What’s happening in this race to the bottom then? These two have the worst defences in the league with 60 conceded each while Peterborough have the second-worst attack with just 23 scored. Reading are a bit better going forward and they’re lower-mid table with 36 for.

Given just how pathetically bad these defences are I think we can side with Over 2.5 Goals. You can’t trust either to win but Reading should get a couple. And, as they can’t play themselves, The Posh literally won’t get a better chance to muster a goal as well to see us pass the Over 2.5 Goals benchmark.

7.45pm: Sheffield Wednesday v Accrington – Under 2.5 Goals

To our aforementioned League Cup 1990/91 winners Sheffield Wednesday who host Accrington at Hillsborough this midweek. It’s a middling sort of clash with The Owls in 8th and Accy in 12th after the weekend, but Wednesday will be desperate for points to try and nab a playoff spot.

They’re one point behind Plymouth in 6th but the Westcountry side have a game in hand over them so there’s no room for slip ups. Accrington are 10 points behind Argyle and 13 clear of the drop zone so they’re looking good for another solid mid-table finish which is not to be sniffed at for a club of their size.

Wednesday were in great form, winning four on the trot before losing to the table-topping Rotherham at the weekend. Accrington have won their last two but failed to notch three points in the six games prior. It should be another close match.

They key here could be that both generally keep things pretty tight and put defence first. Under 2.5 Goals has landed in all five of the hosts’ most recent matches and eight of Stanley’s last 11.

8pm: Inter Milan v Liverpool – Liverpool & Over 2.5 Goals

TV: BT Sport 2 and BT Sport Ultimate

And now for something completely different as we head to the glitz and glamour of the Champions League. First up it’s Italian champions Inter Milan hosting Jurgen Klopp’s ruthless Liverpool at San Siro. This should be an absolute thigh rubber to see us over the top of hump day start the steady decent into the weekend.

Liverpool, as you are probably aware, are in sensational form and they’re only going to get better with the return of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane to their armory. They had a little blip around Christmas but have won their last six in all competitions. They’re 2nd in the Premier League, by the way.

Inter have been a bit ropey of late following their own purple patch of outstanding form. They’ve won just two of their last seven in all competitions and have slipped to 2nd in Serie A behind their old friends AC Milan.

I think we can be on the Liverpool Win and I think we can juice it up by adding Over 2.5 Goals. Inter are reliable scorers, they’ve bagged at least one in 10 of their last 11 while Liverpool have scored two or more in each of their last five before the might of Burnley held them to just the one goal last time out. Liverpool to Win and Over 2.5 Goals has a great chance and is an equally-great price.

8pm: RB Salzburg v Bayern Munich – Bayern & Over 3.5 Goals

TV: BT Sport 3

And finally, to a match where the ruthless corporate machine takes on humble Bayern Munich of Germany. RB Salzburg are running away with the Austrian Bundesliga (Red Bull really does give you wins) while Bayern looked set to do the same across the border in the German equivalent, but their shock loss to Bochum at the weekend has given every other German football fan some hope they can be caught.

RB have a handy 14-point cushion to 2nd while Bayern’s is down to a still-very-imposing six over Borussia Dortmund. Salzburg’s progression to the knockout stages was built on three wins from three home games so perhaps this won’t be as straightforward as you’re thinking.

Umm, well, actually, get a load of this. Bayern won all six of their games, beating Barcelona 3-0 twice and racking up an eye-watering 22 goals in six games. It’s not often I’m glad I’m not a professional footballer but I don’t envy those Salzburg lads.

Just for good measure, Bayern have scored 70 goals in their 22 league matches so far, that’s 3.5 per game, and they’ve notched 20 by themselves in their last seven Bundesliga matches, just shy of 2.9 a game. They’ve scored at least four on four separate occasions over that run so I think we should see an emphatic Bayern Win and Over 3.5 Goals.
