Manchester United and Southampton get another weekend’s Premier League action underway at 12.30pm on Saturday and Phil Thompson’s back to help us navigate our way through this game. The Liverpool FC legend and Paddy Power ambassador is expecting a good, close contest between two wildly-inconsistent teams.
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS
United followed up their FA Cup exit with a 1-1 draw at Burnley on Tuesday while Southampton pulled off a 3-2 comeback win at Tottenham. It’s another day so who knows which version of each team is s going to turn up? Here’s Thommo’s Manchester United v Southampton tips.
12.30pm: Manchester United v Southampton
TV: BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Ultimate
This game has played on my mind because watching Tottenham v Saints unravel during the week, I just thought, ‘Southampton have not played this well for a long time.’
They’re not consistent, which worries me, and if you go on the one game you go, ‘Wow, there is only one outcome in this.’ But they’ve not kept a clean sheet in 14 games so they are going to concede.
If they’re going to be like that you’d think with Manchester United being at home, I know there’s a little bit of pressure building, would win but Southampton have won three of their last six Premier League games so that’s not that bad.

That game the other day against Spurs, Southampton had 23 attempts on goal, away from home. 10 of them were on target which was quite sensational.
There’s something about Manchester United that you can’t get away from and you think they’ve got to come good. Is it just feeling or is it stats? United, against Southampton, have been unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions.
They do seem to have to hoodoo over Southampton at Old Trafford. I do think it’s going to continue and it is a difficult one. They’ve won four of their last five Premier League games at home, Man United.
I’m going to go for Manchester United to win this one 2-1. It’s hard to work out who’s going to score. Cristiano Ronaldo is sitting on the bench these days so it’s hard to pick.
I have gone for Bruno Fernandes to Score Anytime but it is a hard call and I would have a look at the team sheets. United to Win and Both Teams to Score.
