Everton simply can’t afford to lose this. Rafa Benitez is probably the definition of ‘on the brink’, and given the difficult competition they face in the league, a Cup run is just the distraction he needs for his squad.
Hull on the other hand – they’re flirting with the drop in the Championship. Focus on Cup ties, particularly against a Premier League side are the furthest thing from a priority right now.
The Tigers also notoriously easy to predict. They won four straight in November, but outside of that have only won two other games. There are no surprises due in this one, so let’s find a way to land a decent price.

Everton to Win
Hull have lost two games on the bounce. Given each of their previous losing runs have tallied three or more, it’s a fair observation that they’re patchy.
Great opening day result against PNE? Three straight defeats. Statement win against Boro to begin October? Five straight losses. Huge run of form when going six unbeaten between November and mid-December? Beaten in their last two games by Nottingham Forest and Blackpool.
Everton, for all their faults, have an open goal here.
Both Teams to Score – No
Hull have lost 13 games in the Championship this season. How many of those have they scored in? Three. When they don’t come to play, they really don’t come to play.
There seems to be an incredible lack of desire to get back in games, and I don’t think the increased capability of a Premier League team in keeping the ball will entice them into pressing higher.
Over 1.5 Goals
Everton’s five wins this season have seen them net multiple times in each, however. Their habit of scoring late in games to either secure a win or to flatter themselves through the scoreline is a good indication that, while they lack consistency, when they do put in a good performance it generally sustains for the full 90 minutes.
It also helps that they’re likely to play a full-strength XI ahead of a game that, in a regular season, would feature a mix of second-string players and a few that need more minutes.
Demarai Gray to Score Anytime
Hull’s back six are incredibly inexperienced, too, which probably lends to the fact they’re so inconsistent.
But it also means they rely on their athleticism more than experienced heads. They’ll afford space in behind for who is now Everton’s primary source of excitement to pounce.
