Let’s get 2022 started right – with loads of football and even more goals. It’s been a slog of late but hopefully England’s offerings on New Years Day can get us off to a flyer with loads of action and as little Covid as possible.
Here I’ll shake down both of the 3pm NYD Premier League game before taking in the sights and sounds of the EFL’s Championship, League One and League Two. Hopefully we’ll cover enough ground that even if Covid does strike we’ll still have a decent acca for you to mull over.
The good news is that I think we’re on for lots of goals in our selected matches and with the numbers thoroughly crunched there’s plenty to back my assumptions up. So, let’s get at it and see who’s racking them up on Saturday at 3pm.

Watford v Tottenham – Yes
We’ll start in the top flight here the terribly out of form Watford host Tottenham. The Hornets have lost seven of the last eight but, remarkably, have somehow scoring in all of their last six.
Spurs are improving under Antonio Conte and are undefeated in six games, scoring in their last eight. It might be typical Spurs if they were to go and lost this one but Watford somehow always net so Both Teams To Score? Yes kicks us off.
Blackpool v Hull – Yes
Dropping into the second tier for our next match as Blackpool face Hull. The Tangerines are 13th with Hull down in 19th and both are in poor form. There are just three wins between them in their last 10 combined games.
In terms of BTTS it’s landed in three of Pool’s last five, with those coming in their most recent matches. Hull’s numbers have really caught my eye as well and they’ve had Both Teams To Score? Yes in four of their last five. With it starting to land with frequency there’s a good chance we’ll see it again between these two on New Year’s Day.
Oxford v Cheltenham – Yes
Off to League One for Oxford v Cheltenham now and again it’s one side’s results that have swung it for me. That’s the hosts Oxford who have witnessed BTTS in 10 of their last 13 in all competitions.
The Robins are a little more reserved with four of their last six having at least one goal each but it’s still landing more often than not of late. I think there’s a good chance we’ll see Both Teams To Score? Yes here.
Rotherham v Bolton – No
Staying in League One where leaders Rotherham tackle Bolton in 15th. The Trotters had started well but they’ve gone off the boil of late, winning just one of their last five. The Millers haven’t lost for the first time in all competitions since September 11th last time out and will be looking to bounce back.
Bolton have lost their last two without troubling the scoresheet and BTTS? No has clicked in five of their last six in all competitions. Rotherham have seen Both Teams To Score? No in three of their last five so I’m backing one or both to enjoy a shutout here.
Forest Green v Stevenage – No
Forest Green manager Rob Edwards might have been pleased of their Covid-enforced break after his League Two table-toppers blew a 4-1 lead against rock-bottom Oldham to draw 5-5 last time out. They’ll be looking to get back to their defensive best against goal-shy Stevenage on New Year’s Day.
Boro are 21st in the 4th tier and have scored just 16 goals in their 22 league games so far. They’ve managed just one goal in their last four matches and should struggle against the standout side in their division. Both Teams To Score? No feels the way to go here.
