Chelsea v Juventus is the kind of blockbuster fixture everyone gets excited for when they think of Champions League fixtures. Carrying a legacy of winning title after title in Italy, Juve were then given a global boost by Cristiano Ronaldo and to some extent, Paulo Dybala.
Over the course of the last decade, they’ve courted Max Allegri, Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri and Andrea Pirlo. For those not keeping score, that’s a pair of blokes who came to England and were successful, someone deemed almost too Italian to come to England – and a chap whose insufficient grooming made him a cult hero among unkempt men in the midlands. What a legacy!
Tuesday 20:00 – Chelsea v Juventus
BT Sport 2 / BT Sport Ultimate
Chelsea haven’t quite been as successful, but under Thomas Tuchel, they have a stranglehold on the most competitive Premier League in a long time. They’ve got the most functional attacking passages of play while their actual strength lies with their defensive shape. It’s quite a complement, especially when you consider Romelu Lukaku has yet to fire really and remains out injured. Here’s a Bet Builder I fancy for this blockbuster game on Tuesday.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Chelsea To Win
Chelsea at home and their under Thomas Tuchel’s wing. Juventus are eighth in Serie A and stuttering. If you want to trade them off the back of winning four consecutive domestic doubles before Inter Milan pinched it last term, along with that win in Turin earlier in the group, work away – but it wouldn’t be me.
Chelsea are in peak form at this juncture and to back against them winning here would be strange, especially as this is a mightily quick turnaround from these sides played in respective league games. Chelsea steamrollered Leicester in second gear, but Juve had to play out a gruelling contest against Lazio.
Both Teams To Score
Well, apart from the fact that Juve are one of very few sides to actually find the net against Chelsea this year, it’s worth pointing out that The Old Lady, despite their dismal form, have defensive issues rather than problems finding the net.
They inevitably do so, with Empoli the only team keeping a clean sheet against Allegri in Italy this year. Chelsea’s defensive record is exemplary, but the smart call is on goals here.
Half-Time: Chelsea
The Blues have scored in the opening half in five of their last six games in the Premier League. Their blueprint is to lead and control games from that point; allowing teams the ball and waiting for them to make a mistake.
Juventus’ good results have come from manufacturing situations. They’re scoring penalties at a rapid rate and six of their last eight goals in Serie A have come in the final 15 minutes of games. It might not be a sustainable metric, but it does speak to them sizing up games before making adjustments to exploit.
Chelsea To Have Eight Or More Shots On Target
Juventus play a very, very low block and Chelsea’s goal distribution is coming from all angles. While I don’t honestly believe they’ll shoot on sight to begin with, Juve are a touch different from the Southamptons of this world and will dig in to frustrate their hosts. After losing in Italy the Blues need a win to have any chance of claiming top spot, and will likely pepper Wojciech Szczesny’s goal throughout.
