Ahh, football. Just six days into the new season and we’ve already got a wonderful juxtaposition as Chelsea tackle Villarreal in the Super Cup at exactly the same time as a handful of EFL Cup fixtures rumble on around some of the more quaint provincial grounds in the UK.

We’ve got the Champions League winners facing the Europa League winners in the beautiful surroundings of Monaco’s Stade Louis II. Wait, what? It hasn’t been played there since 2012? They’re playing it at Windsor Park this year? Maybe these games aren’t so different, after all.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Still, it’s probably more of a pull to your average football fan than Burton v Oxford but both get equal billing here at Paddy Power News. As the old saying goes, a winner in the EFL cup pays the same as a winner in the UEFA Super Cup. I think that’s it. Yep.

So, with that mantra ringing in our ears, or eyes, let’s see where the value lies on Wednesday night. Here’s a nice four-fold acca which is certainly worthy of the biggest stage – Windsor Park.

The below picks in a Paddy Power Acca will give you odds of around 24/1. CLICK HERE TO ADD IT TO YOUR BETSLIP.

7.45pm: Blackpool v Middlesbrough – Under 2.5 Goals

Newly promoted Blackpool face Middlesbrough in the first round of the EFL Cup at Bloomfield Road. I think we can safely expect some rotation from the visitors here, especially after their hard-fought 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday.

Blackpool also started their 2021/22 Championship campaign with a point, denying Bristol City in the 93rd minute to earn a 1-1 draw. Neither of these will be attacking from the off. It feels pretty safe to side with Under 2.5 Goals in what looks set to be an attritional affair.

7.45pm: Burton Albion v Oxford United – Oxford United to Win

Two League One sides meet here with last season’s 6th-placed team travelling the 16th-placed side. Oxford gave The Brewers an absolute pasting last season, scoring nine goals, conceding just one and winning both games between the two comfortably.

It’s a new season with various signings and departures from both camps, but that’s a pretty comprehensive line of form to work with. Burton won at the weekend while United got a point in the posh-university derby with Cambridge. Despite that, there’s only one way to go on Wednesday and that’s with an Oxford Win.

7.45pm: Nottingham Forest v Bradford – Forest to Win & Under 2.5 Goals

This is a Championship v League Two match up with the higher-ranked team having home advantage. Forest were woefully short on goals last season and their attacking problems haven’t been solved as yet in this window.

They’re fairly good at the back though and should have enough to win here to nil. Bradford are a decent 4th tier outfit but drew a blank against Exeter at the weekend in their 0-0 draw. The price on Forest to Win & Under 2.5 Goals is too good to ignore in this game.

8pm: Chelsea v Villarreal – Chelsea to Win

Champions League winners Chelsea take on Villarreal in the traditional European curtain-raiser in, yes, Windsor Park. This should be pretty decent fare but Chelsea have a pretty poor record in this particular match, winning just one of their four appearances which was also their first back in 1998.

Wednesday 8pm: Chelsea v Villarreal
BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Ultimate

Still, it’s one more than their Spanish opponents who will be playing in their first Super Cup. Villarreal will be bang up for this, but I think Thomas Tuchel will also be desperate to win this and please Roman Abramovich, thus securing his job until at least October. At the prices on offer I think we can back The Blues’ vastly superior squad to get the job done with a Chelsea Win.
