Matchweek 13 of the 2024/25 Premier League largely went to expectations. Every game that was won was taken by the pre-match favourite.
But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some eye-catching moments and things we should remember for our future bets. Here’s five things we learned about the 2024/25 Premier League this week from our football tipster and statto Andrew Beasley.
Liverpool amplify Man City’s problems
We have to start at Anfield, where Liverpool breezed past a team of ghosts masquerading as Manchester City. Pep Guardiola brandished six fingers at full time, kindly reminding Reds fans of how many times their side have been champions of Europe.
He may also have been indicating City’s position in the table if they get beaten by Nottingham Forest in midweek. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are good on the break and will fancy their chances against a non-existent midfield at the Etihad.
Liverpool recorded (over) three expected goals, only the second time the Cityzens have allowed as much in the league in the xG era. Extreme as this game was on that front, Guardiola’s side have allowed at least two expected goals in their last five matches. Back teams to score against them every time while this trend lasts.
Super Sub useful when backing Fulham
At Tottenham, Fulham’s Tom Cairney became the 101st player to notch the achievement of scoring a goal and receiving a red card in a Premier League match.
He was only the seven to do so when coming off the bench though. Cairney couldn’t complete the feat as quickly as Ivan Klasnic’s 13-minute masterclass in 2010, but he continued a theme of Fulham’s season.
Marco Silva has now generated six goals from his substitutes this season, the most of any top flight club and only one shy of his total from 2023/24. Paddy Power’s Super Sub offer is very much in play if you’re betting on Fulham’s goal scorers.
Brentford the comeback kings
Brentford went behind in 26 of their 38 league matches last season. Only the final bottom four teams in the division did so on more occasions.
The Bees did not sting back too often, collecting just 11 points from those matches, 0.42 per game. They are made of much sterner stuff this term.
Facundo Buonanotte’s opener at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday means that Thomas Frank’s men have trailed in eight of their 13 games, still far more often than he would like.
Brentford responded with four goals, though, to take their tally of recovered points in 2024/25 to nine. Only Manchester City (13) and Aston Villa (11) have gained more, not that either looked like adding to their totals on Sunday.
If you’re betting in play and the Bees go behind, do not write them off this season.
Penalty drama shows unpredictability of Premier League
Bournemouth’s 4-2 win at Wolves showed the difficulty in making predictions.
The Cherries were narrow favourites for the three points so their victory wasn’t a surprise. Justin Kluivert becoming the first player to score three penalties in an English top flight game since 1957 was rather less expected. And not just because we’ve waited 67 years for it to happen.
This season saw the fewest Premier League penalties after 12 weeks since 2004/05. The referee at Molineux, Peter Bankes, averaged one spot kick every 6.8 games before Saturday, the least frequent of any current ref with at least 15 top flight games on their CV.
So, obviously, he had to award three in little over an hour. You just never know what will happen on any given Saturday.
Expect more late goals
This season remains the year of late drama. There’s nothing better/worse than an important goal in injury time (delete as appropriate).
Daniel Munoz equalised for Crystal Palace in the fourth minute of stoppage time against Newcastle at Selhurst Park on Saturday. It means there have been 10 matches in which ‘Both Teams to Score: Yes’ bets paid out in the 92nd minute or later this season.
Some of the goals have inevitably been consolations in defeat. However, the latest instance was the sixth which resulted in a 1-1 draw, the fourth in just the previous five match weeks. Palace and Ipswich have each been involved in one of the last two and they meet at Portman Road on Tuesday.
Anyone leaving matches early or cashing out their bets too soon could be missing out big style this term.
