With the return of the Premier League, we’re taking an in-depth look at the best (and worst) signings of the summer so far.
There were several big underachievers last season with Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea all missing out on a place in the Champions League. They won’t want to experience that embarrassment again and have brought in several new additions to get them over the line.
That’s right, Chelsea are still signing players. At this rate, Todd Boehly is going to have to build a brand-new dressing room just to fit them all in!
The three newly-promoted teams have also been busy trying to ensure they have the quality required to avoid the drop.
Recruitment is often the biggest factor in how a club performs. Get it right and it could equal glory, but get it wrong and it could cost a manager their job.

Many factors make a good signing. Of course, the main one is their ability, but the age, the price and the experience of a new addition matter too.
10. Savinho (Troyes to Man City – £30.8m)
The champions have signed just one player so far this summer, with Brazilian starlet Savinho arriving from fellow City Football Group club Troyes. He impressed in La Liga last season, on loan at Girona, playing a key part in their run to third place. He’s still only 20 years old which is why he places far down this list, but he’s an exciting addition.
9. Pedro Neto (Wolves to Chelsea – £54m)
Now there’s no denying how good of a player Pedro Neto is, but his injury record coupled with the price tag of £54m is why he doesn’t place higher. With Chelsea’s huge squad, there’s also a possibility he won’t start regularly. However, the Portuguese international has the potential to shine and deserves the big move.
8. Matthijs de Ligt (Bayern Munich to Man Utd – £42.7m)
The Dutch centre-back has reunited with his former manager Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford and is an exciting addition to the Red Devils’ defence. It’s a move that has been touted for a while and his partnership with former Ajax teammate Lisandro Martinez has the potential to be special. De Ligt is prone to an injury or two though, so keeping him fit will be United’s priority.
7. Fabio Carvalho (Liverpool to Brentford – £27.5m)
It was a surprise when Liverpool made it clear that they were willing to listen to offers for Fabio Carvalho, given his impressive stint in the Championship last season. Brentford were quick to pounce and beat many clubs to his signature. He’s likely to be a massive player for them this season as they look to stay clear of a relegation battle.
6. Ben Brereton Diaz (Villarreal to Southampton – £7m)
How important Brereton Diaz could be to Southampton’s survival hopes, and the low price tag, are why he’s on this list. The Chilean forward bagged a decent number of goals on loan at Sheffield United last season, but he seems better suited to Southampton and could be on the end of many more chances this term. If they do stay up, he has the potential to be the reason why.
5. Daichi Kamada (Lazio to Crystal Palace – free)
The fact Palace managed to secure a player of Kamada’s quality for absolutely nothing is why he’s in the top five. The Japanese international has worked with Oliver Glasner before and was a key player in Eintracht Frankfurt’s run to the Europa League just a couple of years ago. The Eagles forward line was weakened with the loss of Michael Olise, but they’ve secured a great addition here.
4. Max Kilman (Wolves to West Ham United – £40m)
West Ham have, arguably, had the best window out of any team so far. Their capture of Wolves defender Kilman is a huge coup and many are tipping the Hammers to be the surprise package of the season. With David Moyes a distant memory, they have brought in Julen Lopetegui, who has the quality needed to get the most out of their new stars.
3. Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth to Tottenham Hotspur – £65m)
It might sound like a lot of money for the 26-year-old forward, but Solanke scored 19 times for Bournemouth in the Premier League last season. He has all the attributes to be a top striker and his partnership with Son Heung-Min and co could be deadly for Spurs. He might not be as prolific as Harry Kane, but he can perfectly fill the still vacant void left by the Englishman.
2. Ricardo Calafiori (Bologna to Arsenal – £42m)
Arsenal’s biggest signing this summer is the former Bologna star, who impressed at Euro 2024 with Italy. One area that Mikel Arteta’s side needed to improve to help them catch up to Manchester City was left-back, and it seems this is where he will be deployed for the Gunners.
1. Niclas Füllkrug (Borussia Dortmund to West Ham – £27m)
Less than £30m for a player who starred for Dortmund in their run to last season’s Champions League final is a good bit of business. Yes, he might be 31, but he’s perfect for the Hammers. The German is great in the air and a proven finisher at the top level so will be a perfect target for the likes of Jarrod Bowen, James Ward-Prowse and Crysencio Summerville.
