The race for promotion to the Championship is heating up and here’s everything you need to know about the League One play-offs this season.
While the top two teams in League One earn automatic promotion to the Championship, those who finish third to sixth battle it out in the play-offs for the final promotion place.
A place in the EFL’s top division is lucrative with most of the TV revenue generated going to teams who play in the Championship.
Going up via the play-offs is the fairytale end to a season and most sides would rather win the Wembley showpiece than finish second and go up automatically.
In recent years, sides promoted from League One have carried the momentum and been a force the following season, with some even earning back-to-back promotions and eventually reaching the Premier League.
Ipswich are a prime example. They finished second in 2022/23 and repeated the feat in this season’s Championship to earn a spot in the Premier League.
Portsmouth were crowned League One champions this season and Derby County took second. Bolton Wanderers and Peterborough United secured play-off spots and were joined by Oxford United and Barnsley on the final day.
