Saturday 3pm: Huddersfield Town v Leeds United
Championship match at The John Smith’s Stadium

UNDER 3.5 GOALS

This local derby should be a feisty affair. But that doesn’t necessarily translate into goals being a certainty. Both Huddersfield and Leeds have seen the same amount of their Championship matches finish Under 3.5 Goals (24), which is just over 70% of their league clashes this season.

Leeds possess the best defensive away record in the division and have achieved a league-high of eight clean sheets on the road. Expect them to try and manage through the game, especially following an energy-sapping night in London midweek against Chelsea. On the other side, Huddersfield are still adjusting to life under André Breitenreiter, so don’t expect them to be at their free-flowing best just yet.

BRODIE SPENCER TO COMMIT 1 OR MORE FOULS

Spencer has established himself in the Huddersfield starting eleven following his recall from a loan spell at Motherwell in January. The versatile defender is capable of playing on either side as a full-back or wingback, and he should again keep his place for the visit of Leeds. Daniel Farke’s side are very dangerous in the wide areas, and both Huddersfield wingbacks will be kept regularly busy on the day.

The 19-year-old has recorded five fouls across his last five games, including three in their previous match, the first of the Breitenreiter era with Huddersfield. Wilfried Gnonto should get the start for Leeds in the right winger role, and in only three matches since the beginning of December has he failed to draw a foul from the opposition.

ARCHIE GRAY TO COMMIT 1 OR MORE FOULS

Following a strong display against Chelsea on Wednesday in his preferred central midfielder role, Gray should return to the right-back position Daniel Farke has regularly utilised him in for this Saturday’s game. The all-action youngster has started every league match in 2024, and his committed displays have made him a firm favourite with the Leeds supporters.

Huddersfield may target him early on, knowing it could take a little time to settle back into the right-back job after serving in central midfield last time out. Expect him to make at least one tackle in the match that referee Andrew Kitchen doesn’t take too kindly to, especially with him eager to make an impact as he always is.

JOE RODON SHOWN A CARD

Another Leeds player who has been a regular starter for some time is centre-back Joe Rodon. The Wales international has started every single club match since the beginning of October and only once failed to complete the full 90 minutes. Daniel Farke sees him as an integral part of the team that they cannot do without. Tiredness, however, has to become a factor, especially during a rather hectic schedule for Leeds.

Rodon is the joint-highest carded Leeds player this season, along with his current central defensive partner Ethan Ampadu. He’ll be up against a Huddersfield forward line full of confidence after their victory at Watford last weekend, and having already been carded in three of the last six matches, there’s every chance another yellow is received once more.

OVER 3.5 CARDS

There should be a hot atmosphere at the John Smith’s Stadium for this West Yorkshire derby, and as such some heated exchanges and duels should take place on the pitch. This, in turn, should lead to some cards being produced by Andrew Kitchen. This particular official has averaged 3.75 cards per game in 2024, so he is no stranger to dishing out bookings.

This has been a winning selection in each of the last six head-to-head renewals, so it is a contest that generally attracts cards.

Furthermore, in addition to the local rivalry element, both teams still have something to play for this season, adding further spice to the occasion.
