Premier League club owners showed great restraint in the first half of the 2023/24 season, but as the business end starts to loom into view, the Premier League sack race might go into overdrive.
There have been three managerial changes so far this season with Paul Heckingbottom, Steve Cooper and Roy Hodgson either losing their jobs or stepping down.
Chris Wilder and Nuno Espirito Santo took over at Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest respectively to try and guide them to safety, with former Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner taking the hot seat at Crystal Palace.

No Manager To Leave
As we near the end of the season it could be a case of every manager staying in their post. Making a change this late on is a big risk to take and the grass isn’t always greener.
Erik ten Hag
Since the arrival of new minority owners at Old Trafford there has been talk of a managerial change. It’s perhaps the most pressurising job in football but Erik ten Hag hasn’t done a bad job since taking charge of Manchester United.
There have been questions marks about recruitment and style of play, but a recent comeback victory of rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final has rewarded Ten Hag and United with a third Wembley trip in less than a year. Surely he can’t be sacked now?
Mauricio Pochettino
The former Tottenham boss is struggling to work his magic at Chelsea and the Blues are currently in the bottom half of the table despite spending huge amounts.
A couple of years of upheaval at Stamford Bridge has been the contributing factor to the club’s slide down the table, although Todd Boehly and co will have been expecting more from Mauricio Pochettino.
Chris Wilder
Sheffield United reappointed Chris Wilder on an 18-month contract in December in the hope he could repeat his success during his first spell in charge.
However, little has changed and the Blades are still struggling to pick up points that they desperately need to survive. We have seen it happen before, but surely they won’t make another change so soon.
Vincent Kompany
The gap between the Premier League and the Championship has never been bigger and there’s a case to be made that last season’s second tier was probably the weakest in recent memory as all three promoted sides are struggling.
Burnley romped to the title but Vincent Kompany‘s determination to play out from the back is costing them goals at the wrong end of the pitch.
He has transformed the Clarets since joining, but ultimately it’s a results business and a new manager bounce could get them to safety.
Nuno Espirito Santo
Despite starting his spell well as manager of Forest, they have since slipped back into the relegation zone although it’s through no fault of Nuno’s.
The club were hit with a four-point deduction recently for breaking the Premier League’s rules around profit and sustainability which leaves them a point from safety.
David Moyes
West Ham have been pretty wretched since the turn of the year and the 6-0 hammering at home to Arsenal – which prompted plenty of fans to stream out of the ground before half-time – compounded David Moyes‘ woes.
Memories of a European triumph seem to be long gone with The Hammers winning just one in their last eight league games. Although they are still in the Europa League.
