Chelsea have been an entertaining watch so far this season, showing glimpses of quality in attack but continuing to look incredibly poor defensively. No Edouard Mendy was an issue at the weekend as Kepa again made a glaring error leading to a goal, and Mendy is listed as ‘questionable’ for this game which is concerning.
As mentioned though, they have shown bits of strong attacking play, averaging 1.9 xGF per game, so should at least score in this game. Europa League winners Sevilla are an excellently organised side with some fantastic players, and Julen Lopetegui’s side shouldn’t be underestimated at Stamford Bridge.
They are a sturdier team than Chelsea, but perhaps not as dangerous in attack, though that shouldn’t matter too much given the way Chelsea have been defending. Both teams to score looks a sensible play on Tuesday.
One of the very last teams a frail Manchester United team would have wanted to face is PSG, with all the attacking talent they have on their books. The 19/20 Champions League runners-up were excellent throughout the tournament last season, posting some incredible underlying numbers against Europe’s elite (2.3 xGF, 1.1 xGA per game).
Manchester United picked up a confidence-boosting win over Newcastle at the weekend, but this is a different level of opponent. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have looked woeful in defence this season, allowing 2.4 xGA per game in the Premier League. What is most concerning is that they have been that poor against bottom-half teams.
They could be given the run around here, but United do have counter-attacking capabilities that could see them get on the scoresheet, but goals are likely at the Parc des Princes so back over 2.5 goals.
Real Madrid were extremely disappointing in last season’s Champions League, getting hammered over two legs by Manchester City in the Last 16, but they did win the La Liga title thanks to some great post-break form.
They have struggled to get going this season though, shown at the weekend in their 1-0 loss at home to Cadiz, so Shakhtar will fancy their chances of making life difficult for Zinedine Zidane’s side. The Ukrainian side showcased their quality in their run to the Europa League semi-finals, especially in attack, as Shakhtar do boast some talented forward players.
Defensively though, they are suspect, and a poor defence is the reason they didn’t qualify from the Champions League group stage last season (2.3 xGA per game). We could be in for an entertaining game in Spain, and I like both teams to score at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.
Midtjylland couldn’t have asked for a tougher group in their debut Champions League campaign, drawn with Liverpool, Atalanta and Ajax. The Danes took a few scalps on their way to the group stages, knocking out Swiss champions Young Boys and Czech champions Slavia Prague, so shouldn’t be completely written off.
Atalanta got all the way to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in their debut campaign, impressing on the way too, being extremely entertaining to watch. They ranked as the best team in Italy last season, posting incredible underlying numbers (2.2 xGF, 1.1 xGA per game), and have continued in their free-flowing form this term.
So far this season, Atalanta have played four league games in which BTTS has landed in all of them, and all four matches have seen over 4.5 goals… Goals should again flow here, so back over 2.5 to round off the fourfold.
