Cricket World Cup Group Match at Eden Gardens

India To Win

South Africa are one of the few teams who have a positive recent record against India. Since the start of 2020 they have met in six ODIs (all in 2022) with South Africa winning four. However India’s dominance at home is well-documented. They have won 18 of their last 21 ODIs on home turf, including a perfect start to this World Cup. India To Win kicks us off.

Quinton De Kock To Score Over 34.5 Runs

Quinton de Kock has had an exceptional tournament so far, particularly against spin, averaging 112 and striking at 99. India will likely only play five bowlers (due to Hardik Pandya’s injury) with 20 overs coming from spin courtesy of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja – two bowlers De Kock likes to face. The South African averages 68 against Jadeja, being dismissed by him only once in 70 balls, while Kuldeep has never got De Kock out – albeit from just 10 balls bowled. De Kock to score over 34.5 runs looks  a smart play.

Jasprit Bumrah To Be India’s Top Wicket Taker

The ball swings at Eden Gardens. In the two matches it has hosted so far at this World Cup the average swing is 1.13 degrees, which is higher than any other venue. This is good news for Jasprit Bumrah, who was nearly unplayable during his opening spell against Sri Lanka. Add to this that he averages only 21.58, at an economy of only 4.07, against South Africa. I like Bumrah to be India’s top wicket-taker.

Virat Kohli To Be India’s Top Run Scorer

Virat Kohli is having a predictably good tournament scoring 442 runs at 88.40. Expect him to carry on his form in this game – in 30 ODIs against South Africa Kohli averages 61.00 with four 100s and eight 50s. Kohli has fond memories of this particular South African attack. Their headline pace pair of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi (Jansen has never bowled at Kohli in ODIs) have only got Kohli out twice in 261 balls. Don’tbe surprised if Kohli is India’s top run-scorer.

India To Have The Highest Opening Partnership

India’s opening partnerships have fared better than South Africa’s in the tournament so far. India average 52.85 before the first wicket, while South Africa come in at 37.57. India have scored over 100 more runs for the first wicket throughout the tournament compared to SA as well. We’ll finish with India to have the highest opening partnership.
