Leeds to win

Leeds will be hoping the international break won’t have resulted in them losing momentum in their promotion push. It’s three wins in a row for Daniel Farke’s side and the only team to have defeated them in any competition in 2024 was Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Watford began life under Tom Cleverley with a 1-0 away win at Birmingham; a performance the interim boss described as scrappy and not too pretty. They’ll need to produce a much stronger showing than that against Leeds.

The fact is, it’s just too hard to back against Leeds. They’re the only club in the league to concede fewer than 30 goals and they possess a 76.2% win ratio against current bottom-half opposition, which includes defeating Watford 3-0 back in September.

Under 4.5 goals

Following the last international break in November, Leeds resumed action with an away draw at lowly Rotherham; a match they’d have certainly expected to win. Many of their key players have been away with their countries over the last few weeks and Friday’s game will be more about the result than the performance.

Games are more pressurised at this time of the season, especially for those with plenty on the line. Leeds are on a four-game run of games finishing with two goals or less, plus with Watford adjusting to life under a new manager, this match could potentially fall into the scrappy category.

Leeds could have half an eye on Monday’s Yorkshire derby with Hull, if they get into a winnable position, and with Watford only once netting 2+ goals in their previous 13 in all competitions then a fairly slender away win appears the most logical outcome.

Patrick Bamford anytime goalscorer

It has been quite a mixed season by Patrick Bamford’s high standards with injuries and the strong form of others denying him many opportunities in the opening months of the season. However, he has wrestled his way back into Daniel Farke’s XI and four goals in his last six appearances shows where he is with his form.

He now has 10 in all competitions and will be refreshed and ready to go again after recharging his batteries over the international break. With Bamford averaging just under 2.70 shots per game over his last 14 matches, it highlights how threatening he has been and will likely give Watford plenty to think about.

Leeds also top the league based on number of shots on goal and whoever the striker is in this team simply has to be considered a very likely candidate to score.

Leeds to win by exactly two goals

It isn’t easy to get a clear assessment on Watford right now given this is their second game under a new manager, but Leeds certainly won’t be taking them lightly. This however is the first of two vital games over the Easter Weekend and Daniel Farke will look for his team to produce a professional display.

Watford’s home form has been a disappointment for them as only Rotherham and QPR have achieved fewer points in home matches. Despite this, they’ve been heavily defeated just once at Vicarage Road; 4-1 to Bristol City. The vast majority of the other losses have been tight.

A chance is taken on a two-goal margin of victory instead of one as the game will likely become more stretched later on should the visitors already be ahead. At the moment there is a gulf in class between the two teams.

Leeds to be winning at half time

In 2024, only on four occasions in league contests have Leeds not been ahead after 45 minutes, which is pretty good going from 13 matches. They’re the only team in the Championship with an unbeaten record when opening the scoring (W19, D2), reflecting the importance of a strong start.

On the flip side, Watford have the worst first-half home record in the entire division. Incredibly, they’ve only twice been leading at half time at Vicarage Road. They are still adjusting to life under Cleverley, so it could still be a relatively disjointed performance as they settle into a new style and tactics.

Leeds will want to start strongly and look to manage the game, as well as certain players, with an eye on Monday’s clash with Hull.
