Things we love to see: opportunities for midweek Premier League multiples. It’s one of life’s biggest pleasures, you know – having Prem games midweek instead of watching Dynamo Kiev battle it out with Lazio in the middle of nowhere and trying to pump yourself to have an opinion strong enough to back the overs.

But now that’s no longer an issue as England’s top flight copes with the backlog of fixtures by just throwing them this late in the schedule and ultimately making them far less meaningful than they may have been a few weeks ago.

As Antonio Conte once famously said – we just want one normal day of Barclays. And he was dead right.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Are you ready? Okay, what do Spurs, Villa, Sheffield United, Newcastle, Everton and Wolves all have in common? Well, very little apart from the fact they’re all kicking off at 6pm on a Wednesday and they all feature in this suggested treble.

I can only apologise if you went barreling through Wikipedia there looking for a sophisticated answer like they’ve all had South American wingers score at least three goals in a Premier League campaign.

That’s not true, either. Sorry if you went and checked. Still, football! Here’s my idea of a winning treble.

Everton v Wolves – Everton to Win

Sky Sports Premier League

When in doubt, back Everton to win a meaningless game so they can pad their end of season points tally.

It’s their trademark since Moyes left. It deprives the fanbase of the right to fully complain given that their top-four challenge – something even West Ham outstayed them in, managed by ehh, never mind – didn’t factor at the business end, and that’s the worst thing of all.

There’s a few clubs like Everton who consistently do this, and in fairness to Spurs and the much-maligned Daniel Levy, at least when they get the chequebook out, they manage to achieve something.

The closest Everton will get to a Champions League final is a dodgy box in Phil Jagielka’s gaff for their next reunion.

Newcastle v Sheffield United – Newcastle to Win

Sky Sports Mix

You can replace Newcastle with almost any word in the English dictionary at the top of this paragraph and I’d not turn you off the bet. Steve Bruce is a master conman – knowing how to survive in gigs by massaging memorable results into seasons that have been nothing other than disappointments at the crux of them.

Still, he’s a Geordie himself and they weren’t relegated, so Mike Ashley and co will do a layman’s read of the situation and keep him on. What an operation. Either way, anyone to beat Sheffield United is a bet. Add them in.

Tottenham v Aston Villa – Aston Villa and the Draw

Sky Sports Main Event

Spurs are not on an upward curve – it’s one of the true late-season red herrings. Have results improved? Yes. Have they exceeded their expected performance levels beyond just the ability of world class players in their squad? No. They’ll succumb to super-organised sides who like to control games and no side have propped themselves up that league table in that regard quite like Villa.

Dean Smith is a genuine contender for Manager of the Year if it weren’t for City’s unbeaten stretch and David Moyes forgetting it wasn’t the early-00s. He’s due an extension and this result could be the catalyst.

Wednesday’s Premier League tips:
