Take her breath away: Irish broadsheets refuse to publish Paddy Power’s Noirin O’Sullivan advert

Newspapers blow hot air as Paddy Power turns the heat up over breathalyzer scandal

Paddy Power were foiled on Wednesday night after both the Irish Independent and the Irish Times refused to publish its advert relating to Nóirín O’Sullivan’s future as Garda Commissioner. Fourth estate? Hmmm.

The advert which features the embattled senior Garda along with the headline “take my breath away” was pulled at the 11th hour by both outlets for being “inappropriate”.

With O’Sullivan under continued pressure the bookie makes it 2/9 for her not to be the Garda Commissioner on December 31 with odds of 11/4 available on her still being in the job by the end of the year.

Ken Robertson, Paddy Power Advertising Director said: “Given the amount of coverage both titles have afforded this story recently, it seems absurd they wouldn’t print our ad. I don’t accept their position that the advert was “inappropriate”, perhaps they could have let their readers make up their own minds.”

Nóirín O’Sullivan PP Avert

As for who could replace O’Sullivan Paddy Power make it even money that the next permanent Garda Commissioner is not Irish, while it’s 6/5 that the job goes to an Irish civilian and 3/1 that a current Garda gets the gig.
